Araknidz is a tangle from another Zentangle® newcomer: Austin, TX tangler Tracy Cooper.
Tracy explains how she learned about Zentangle recently,
“I’d been looking for something to do to get me away from the computer but just couldn’t find anything that was relaxing – it all turned out to be stuff that felt more like “work”. I always loved drawing, but my efforts were horrible at best, so it really wasn’t something I investigated.
However, one day my niece started posting doodles she did in her office meetings on Facebook. They were so lovely that I decided I could probably do something similar … I thought if I was going to do it, I should have the right tools, so I bought a pack of Sakura Pigma Micron pens of different sizes.
The package talked about the quality of the ink and that the pens were great for drafting, drawing, and all your “Zentangle projects”. I’d never heard of it. So, of course, I googled it. I was amazed by what I saw. After I took a basic class for beginners I was hooked. I could do this and the results were amazing. And when I finished my first Zentangle, I cried (my daughter will attest to this fact :D).
Now I spend my evenings looking up tangles and learning to draw several each night. I’m still amazed at the results and have found satisfaction in my new found hobby and the huge community of friendly Tanglers.”
As Tracy notes, she spends her evening learning a few tangles. And this is how her Araknidz tangle came about:
“I was attempting Zimba and completely botched it on my drawing. I finished my tangle with the botched version and decided I’d go back and relearn Zimba later.
When I did go back, I saw the fabric Ria sent as the inspiration for Zimba, and found that my “botched” tangle still seemed to look a lot like it, so I reworked it into something I believe is an original tangle. Although Wedge starts out similar, the end result is different.“
Araknidz is another one of those grid-based tangles that has a variety of looks depending on where you choose to add solid ink and/or shading. Fun to explore these variations.
Tracy illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Araknidz below and she features it as a fragment in a tile with a little Crescent Moon variation.

Yes Tracy, you did a great job with Araknidz. I like this new tangle and I am glad you found inspiration on that beautiful African texture too!
wow ! Hi Tracy..After looking at the other tangles you have mentioned, I can see how the confusion can arise ! I just love your tangle Araknidz..So clever !! I’m a fan of Reticula and Fragments !
So happy to hear you are enjoying Zentangle. it is very relaxing to draw. When I drew your pattern for the first time mine had more of a Rhombus shape that i aured and therefore didn’t look like spiders but yours is perfect for a Halloween card. where I think I will put an hourglass on the body like a black widow. kinda hiding in plain sight! eeek! Interesting how all patterns can be found in nature. on the belly of a spider, or a snake skin, or the back side of a leaf. I am pretty sure god meant for us to copy them. to enjoy them and feel what it is like to be in the creative mode. I very much enjoy drawing ants as well they are so fun.
Hi Tracy, I love Araknidz! It is easy to draw and has so many possibilities for variations. I am also new to Tangling and am collecting tangles and trying them in Zentangle Inspired Art pieces. I agree that it is relaxing and SO MUCH FUN! Thank you!
Hi Tracy, Your tangle just filled in a space. I’m doing all angular tangles as there is a “C” as a monogram in the center. Thanks.
