Today we’re playing with Ohio tangler Joan Stark’s Zap tangle.
Zap is another radial-style tangle and we’ve had quite a few of those lately. It’s also similar to several of our “floral” style tangles – Arc Flower, Mumsy, and Su-sy come to mind – but the shape of Zap‘s “petals” is unique and makes the end result also quite different.
Joan writes,
ZAP starts with a small orb. It is surrounded by 3-pointed jagged edge designs.
The next step is to add another circular row of 3-pointed jagged edge designs.
After that, I went to 5-pointed jagged edges. As the ZAP gets larger, the number of points really doesn’t matter.
Fill in any empty space with a jagged edge. When you are satisfied with your tangle, aura it.
I think ZAP looks like an electrical explosion!
In my step-out I used ZAP as a radial-style design — and also as a border!
Zap, I might note, is a pretty good depiction of my nerves on several weeks of antihistamines. Said our doctor’s nurse: “It’s a killer allergy season!” On the right, my Zap example from above with Step 6’s aura added and graphite added to the background edges. Wasn’t sure which version I wanted to use so here’s both 🙂
Joan illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Zap below and she features it in an “electrifying” ZIA drawing with variations in a ribbon-style frame.
As you enjoy any of the tangles on the site, please leave a comment of thanks and encouragement to show the artists you appreciate them for sharing their creativity to inspire yours.

What a fun crazy Tangle!!! ??
Thanks Sharon. Have fun with it!
Another really fun tangle, HURRAY! I couldn’t help but come up with a couple of analogies, so please bear with me: Joan’s large tangle, with all of its exuberant “Zaps,” makes me think of what happens whenever someone walks across a heavy carpet in the winter, then they touch someone else–ZAP/POW!
Linda’s “quieter” Zap, the one with the darker/shaded areas, I’m likening to new parents not wanting to wake their baby as they check on him in his crib–they still get zapped walking across the carpet, but manage to keep the static electricity reaction down to a “Shh, don’t wake the baby” tiny “zap” 😀
What a great analogy! There are lots of options when it comes to Zapping. Lol
Love it. It’s great for many seasons!
Hi Joyce! You noticed that the slice of Zap looks like a Christmas tree. Now I’m wondering what it would look like mixed in with Luv-A trees. Maybe I’ll start my Christmas card early this year. Lol
I like this uncomplicated but beautiful tangle very much.Thank you for sharing with us!
Explosive fun.
