Happy Monday y’all! And the Spring month of April is off and running.
Illinois CZT Lesley Goldberg is back today with her sweet Hearts-a-Flutter tangle. Lesley has two more tangles on the site and you can locate them both by clicking on her tag down the page in the publication date bar right above the comments section.
Lesley shares that Hearts-a-Flutter …
“just came out of my pen when I was playing with a different tangle. It begins with a curly S and with two strokes the ends turn into hearts.
By echoing that stroke it makes it appear the heart is fluttering, thus the name I chose.”
Free-form tangles such as Hearts-a-Flutter are fun to do because you can vary their placement and size within a section and the overall effect turns out different each time. The Zentangle®-original Ahh is a good example of this type of free-form tangle. Of course you can also give them order to create another effect too.
Hearts-a-Flutter is both simple — finished in just 3 steps — and absorbing to tangle as you move around the section placing your shapes. And like many tangles it really gains its interest with the addition of a touch of shading. When you place your curly S’s of Step 1 in a section of your tile, if you want it contained within that section (or don’t want it to fall off the edge of your tile like my little one in the bottom left corner almost did) be sure to allow sufficient space around it to add the strokes of Step 3.
Lesley illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Hearts-a-Flutter below and she demonstrates it in a pretty Zentangle with the Zentangle-original Printemps and fluttery ribbons of CZT Diane Lachance’s Curly-Q.

A lovely, forgiving tangle (just the way I like them!). I tried this as a ribbon, too, and it works brilliantly, starting with a chain of the step1 curly S’s touching at the ends and then doing steps 2 & 3.
I`m sure I`m going to enjoy putting this lovely pattern in my tangles!
