How to draw WEDGE

Zentangle pattern: Wedge. © Linda Farmer and TanglePatterns.com. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. You may use this image for your personal non-commercial reference only. Republishing or redistributing IN ANY FORM including pinning is prohibited under law without express permission.Wedge is a new grid-based tangle from Canadian tangler, Rosemary Turpin and it’s her first on the site.

Rosemary is from Montreal, Quebec, and first became enthralled with Zentangle® early this summer.

She writes,

The City of Montreal is full of artistic people and opportunities to do, see and buy art of all kinds and I’ve lived there for most of my life. But there are no CZTs here yet, they all live off the Island of Montreal so far.

So I’ve been learning Zentangle patterns from the Internet and various books. I’m retired now, so I’m probably a little late to consider teaching Zentangle as a career (always assuming I got my CZT!) but I’m enjoying so many aspects of its practice.

So far, I’ve drawn over 60 tiles and twelve ZIAs. Recently I was offered a month-long show in a small but trendy local restaurant (in September 2016) and I’m thrilled about that!

To share one’s excitement about Zentangle one-on-one with a friend or two, non-commercially, is a natural. But to TEACH Zentangle, it’s never too late to become a CZT! In fact, I’d venture a conservative guess that more than half of all CZTs are in the retirement “generation”. This page explains more from Zentangle HQ on the difference between sharing and teaching. And this page explains much about what is involved in becoming a CZT.

Information about training seminars for 2016 can be found on the ZENTANGLES > TEACHING ZENTANGLE menu on the top of any page on TanglePatterns.com.

For my example of Wedge, I didn’t add all the auras in Rosemary’s Step 4 because I liked what it looked like at the stage where I stopped with a little white space left. 🙂 But as you’ll see in the examples that follow, choosing which areas to aura or fill in will produce many varied looks to Wedge.

Rosemary illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Wedge here and features it in a simple monotangle.

In this example, Rosemary shows another simple variation.

String Suggestions

It’s often possible to enlarge a basic tangle and use it for a String.

For example a single grid tangle square (or “seed”, or "fragment") can be penciled on your tile then you can tangle in the sections created. As Bijou says, “Sometimes I even leave a section blank; which is occasionally my best choice!

This simple idea makes all kinds of Strings possible.

And remember, in Zentangle there’s no right-side-up!

  • Wedge is a fun and absorbing tangle to draw. Wonderful design, Rosemary! I see several possibilities for variation and I love the geometric effects. Great addition to this fabulous site!

Thank you very much, Jan! I too found a couple more variations after publications. I gave my family sets of 4 laminated coasters made from them at Christmas 2015 and sold a couple of sets of them this year. it`s lots of fun to play with!

This is a great design; it’s simple to draw but leaves lots of room for variation. I did a border design that I am going to post on the Facebook page for sketch books. It’s very fun to use with colour and makes a nice background print in any size. Thanks for sharing it with us, and you have inspired me to try to submit one of my designs!
