Earlier this week Sakura of America posted this demonstration created by Dorian Eng, one of my Florida CZT colleagues from Jacksonville in the northeast part of our state.
In this 5-minute video Dorian shows how easy it is to create sweet tangled gift boxes from Zendala® tiles and embellish them using several fun Sakura products.
As she notes, these make beautiful presentation boxes for chocolate or other small gifts. The boxes are friction-fitting so there’s no tape or glue necessary but you can add a ribbon if you so desire.
Supplies used:
- (2) Zendala tiles, or 140# Watercolor paper circles, approximately 3 5/8″ diameter (3.625″ = 9.2 cm)
- Sakura Pigma Micron 01 Pen – Black, permanent ink
- Sakura Glaze 3-D Glossy Pen – White, dimension gloss ink
- Sakura Gelly Roll Moonlight Pen – opaque ink
- Sakura Gelly Roll Stardust Pen – Clear, glitter ink
- Sakura Koi Watercolor Brush Pens
- Sakura Koi Water Brush
- Paper circle template, embossing tool, plastic palette, spray mister
Dorian uses CZT Margaret Bremner’s Beadlines and the Zentangle-original Mooka tangles in her demonstration.
Of course you can also make these clever boxes a little larger, just make sure your paper is a good heavy stock that will hold the shape.

This little box is very clever. I think I will get out my Zendala tiles and give it a go.
I will make several of these gift boxes to hold the money I am giving my grandchildren as part of their Christmas gifts from me! Thank you so much!!!
Although the tangled pattern is different, I remember seeing these boxes made before. Rick made one with the paradox pattern on it for a hanging ornament in project pack number 16. . . He covered it with Mod Podge to help it stay firm. It is a very cleaver box. He showed how to use a square tile to get your markings. Both ways make interesting boxes. Thank you for sharing!
Thanks Linda, I suppose it’s entirely possible the idea for Rick’s Zendala box in Project Pack 16’s Keeping Score theme last year was inspired by this 2015 tutorial from Dorian. It’s a sweet little project!
