How to draw VIADUCT

Zentangle pattern: ViaductCalifornia CZT Wayne Harlow is back with another cool tangle pattern he’s named Viaduct.

Viaduct is one of those tangles that really pops when it’s shaded as you will see in Wayne’s examples.

If you haven’t yet seen the tutorials on shading on TanglePatterns, Part 1 by CZT Marizaan van Beek is here, and Part 2 by CZT Sandy Steen Bartholomew is here. These two free tutorials contain everything you need to know about shading for Zentangle® and your Zentangle-inspired art. For more great tutorials be sure to check out the TUTORIALS link on the pink alphabetic menu bar.

Wayne writes,

This is a tangle that borders on merely being a variation or ‘tangleation’ of several already existing tangles but I feel like the finished product looks enough different to warrant new tangle status.

I find it to be easy to draw and fills space quickly and has quite a bit of dimensionality when it is finished … especially with shading.

I struggled a bit with the name but it kept making me think of the structural supports that I have seen on numerous occasions holding up a bridge or viaduct.

Several tanglers mentioned that Monday’s Tropicana reminded them of bridges so it looks like we’ve got a theme of “structural” patterns going so far this week.

Below Wayne shows us the step-by-step instructions for drawing Viaduct and includes it in a beautifully drawn Zentangle along with Chainlea and a grid-free Fiore.

    Jane Eileen – Fabulous!

Lynne Schmitt – Love this one!

Sharon Carder – Very cool, Wayne! Love your tile also.

Dena Weeks – I love the shading and dimensions. It seems to dive into the tile. This is my new “GO TO” tangle

Jennifer Hohensteiner – Awesome pattern – again! Wayne’s patterns have a distinct style – three dimensional and solid. I can’t help but think of them as more “masculine” – an influence the woman-dominated Zentangle art world can really use. (I hope this observation is not offensive to Wayne or anyone else.) It’s fun to have so many different styles to choose from, anyway – whether masculine, feminine, mineral, animal or vegetable…
