How to draw FIORE

Zentangle pattern: Fiore. Image © Linda Farmer and TanglePatterns.com. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. You may use this image for your personal non-commercial reference only. The unauthorized pinning, reproduction or distribution of this copyrighted work is illegal.Fiore comes to us from Boise, ID CZT Jana Rogers and it’s her first tangle pattern on the site. Jana is a graduate of CZT#10, last fall’s certification seminar.

Interestingly enough, today is the first day of the CZT#11 class in Providence RI. By Wednesday of this week another one-hundred-plus CZTs will be unleashed across the world to help spread the joy of Zentangle®.

If you are looking for a Certified Zentangle Teacher in your area, you can always find the link in the left sidebar (< < < ) on TanglePatterns under the heading SOURCE WEBSITES. It will probably take a couple of weeks for the newest teachers to be added to the page.

Jana describes how she came across Zentangle and is now a Certified Zentangle Teacher.

I first saw the word Zentangle in June of 2012 while doing a search on Amazon for art-related books. When I saw samples of Zentangles that people had posted – I was blown away by the intricate details and thought I could NEVER learn to do that!  But then that strange thing started happening – you know when you’ve never heard a certain word in your life and suddenly it’s everywhere. I was being stalked by Zentangle!! I did a Google search and found so many sites full of great information. I watched Rick and Marie’s videos of Auraknot and Mooka. I started trying patterns on any scrap of paper in my reach. I ordered an Official Zentangle Kit and finally had that beautiful Zentangle paper to tangle on.  I checked for a teacher in my area (none within 500+ miles). I yearned for MORE information. I ordered all the how-to books, I subscribed to TanglePatterns.com to get the emails. I couldn’t get enough information and there weren’t enough hours in the day to practice all those fun patterns. I was completely hooked.

I saw on the Zentangle site that Rick and Maria were having a CZT seminar in Providence, RI in September 2012. I think I sent an email asking if I could sign up (silly me…not knowing those seminars fill up faster than a rock concert!). About a week before the seminar I got a call from Martha – asking if I was still interested in the CZT seminar – someone had to drop out and there was space. I couldn’t buy the plane ticket fast enough! It was the most amazing weekend ever! Meeting all the other people as obsessed with this art-form as I am and getting to eat, drink and sleep nothing but Zentangle for three days. I was in HEAVEN and made so many friends!

I really like Fiore, it’s one of those tangles that surprises you by what one “seed” square becomes as an overall pattern when placed together in a grid. Shading adds wonderful dimension and as Jana points out the possibilities for variations are “endless”.

As you might have guessed, Jana’s tangle was inspired after seeing the Zentangle newsletter article, Grid (Un)Locked,

about ‘grid seeds’ and the fun that can come from just one grid squareI like the flower that appears after several squares have been filled in. It’s great for shading the overlapping petals. And variations within the petal are endless. The word fiore is Italian for flower.”

Here are Jana’s step-by-step instructions for drawing Fiore, and a lovely completed Zentangle featuring her tangle pattern.

  • Carol Samford

Your fans all think you are a genius– because they only see the whole drawing, not the simple steps taken to get to that amazing TADA!
Shhhh, let’s don’t give away the secret!
The first article I saw about zentangle was so awesome I sighed, and turned the page knowing I could never attempt such art. Wellll, the whole world is now one big pattern just waiting for me to draw it. And, heaven forbid I should leave home without my pens! Turn this car around!

  • Tracy

So lovely with just 4 simple steps!

  • Jana

Thanks everyone for your kind words! And thanks so much Linda for sharing my pattern on your WONDERFUL site!! What a great resource for all of us.

  • Arwen

Took me a minute to work it out. I tried to start without a grid. Whoops. Loved it once I grasped it. Very soothing to draw v

  • Anna

Linda, thanks for all you do; every day my heart lifts a bit when I see your email in my inbox.
Jana, your story sound just like mine, in that Zentangle was recommended to me by amazon, but only in November 2012, and since then there has been no turning back. After being wait-listed for a while, I now have a spot in October’s CZT Seminar, and am so excited. Looking forward to learning, and connecting with like-minded people, not to mention seeing Rhode Island in the fall!

  • Very nice! The shading really makes it.

  • Peggie Schurch

What a beautiful tangle, just what I have been looking for, simple to draw, fantastic in effect and takes a hint of colour in the centre outside the block. Have tried it already and am hooked! Many thanks. Peggie Australia

  • Jana, welcome to Tanglepatterns.com, and thanks for sharing this beautiful pattern. I’m sure it will become a favorite. And thanks also to Linda for keeping us supplied with all these wonderful tangles on this great site.

Love the simplicity. I taught the kids to do it and they were really surprised at the overall look done in such a short and easy set of steps.

  • sue allan

Beautiful design. Can not believe what beautiful patterns you can draw with just a few lines. Exceptionally clever. Well done.

  • kayleen

    Jana~
I was so excited to see your tangle posted here– it’s lovely! I also live in the Boise area and, like you, stumbled upon Zentangle around June 2012 shortly after the birth of my baby. I was exhausted with a newborn to care for, but often traded precious napping time for trying my hand at this new “thing” — I was hooked! When I searched for CZTs in our area I was disappointed to see that there were none. Now that I know I have neighbor who is certified, I would love to get more information on how I can connect with you and take a class!

    • Linda Farmer, CZT

Hi Shelley, you can find the link to the list of CZTs in the left sidebar under SOURCE WEBSITES and Jana’s contact information is there.

    Jana,
I just received this new Tangle and I can’t wait to try it out. A friend introduced me to Zentangle in April, but did not have a chance to try it until May. I was immediately hooked and every day I look forward to seeing a new pattern.

    Thank you for sharing!

  • Jennifer Hohensteiner

This is a particularly beautiful pattern – so light and airy. I love the way the grid almost disappears beneath the flow of the pattern.

  • C J Long

I’m new to Zentangle 7-13. I love it! Jana this patern is so easy ! Yet so dramatic! Thanks for sharing.
