How to draw CHARLIE

As CZT® Erin Olson writes, this tangle pattern comes from the land of Peanuts – from the cartoon character Charlie Brown to be more accurate.

According to Wikipedia, Peanuts “ran from October 2, 1950, to February 13, 2000, continuing in reruns afterward. … [Peanuts] is the most popular and influential strip in the history of the comic strip, with 17,897 strips published in all, making it ‘arguably the longest story ever told by one human being’, according to Professor Robert Thompson of Syracuse University. At its peak, Peanuts ran in over 2,600 newspapers, with a readership of 355 million in 75 countries, and was translated into 21 languages.” Yowzah! (What’s really scary is I’m pretty sure I read all 17,897.)

Erin, who also runs the weekly Zendala Dare, explains on her blog how Santa Rosa came to be “Peanut Central” when creator Charles Schultz moved to town in the late 1950’s.

Charlie is almost always seen wearing his trademark shirt with the zig-zag design, and this tangle was inspired by his shirt.

Patterns with alternating dark and light are always intriguing to the eye. (Another fun tangle along these lines is Cracked.) I think you will be surprised to learn how Erin draws the diamond-shaped lines forming the basis for Charlie.

Erin illustrates the steps for drawing Charlie here on her blog, along with a couple of variations. I hope you have a broad-nib pen to achieve all the dark ink or else your 01 Micron will be a goner. 😉
