How to draw TAU

Hi there my tangling friends, thanks as always for the pleasure of your company!

Spanish CZT Tomàs Padrós is back with us today with another of his fun and detailed tangle deconstructions.

His latest is named Tau and it’s based on a hexagonal grid. As usual Tomàs illustrates a variety of cool ways to explore his latest contribution to our resource.

First, he introduces Tau,

Tau is a hexagonal fragment that generates very interesting meta-patterns.

In the simplest arrangement, with all the fragments in the same position, the hexagons ceases to be perceived as such and triangles with rounded sides emerge. Of course the positions can be changed to obtain other effects.

In the tile I have combined Tau with other tangles, such as 63Y, Barney, Hayastone and Loblolly.

The name came to me because of the similarity of the fragment with the T (tau) of the Greek alphabet. The letter Tau is loaded with spiritual meaning since ancient times. It has been used as a symbol of fullness or transformation. In Christianity it is identified with the cross of Saint Francis of Assisi.

Tomàs has gathered together four ways to draw a hexagonal grid from other contributors’ tangles on the site, “so that no one is left without drawing a hexagonal grid with a method to their liking.” His examples come from the hexagonal grid-based tangles Hexonu and Loblolly, Hayastone, Barney, and Sparkool.

It’s interesting to turn your Tau tile and view it from all sides, quite different results. When I was doing my example I found myself making Crescent Moon-like shapes (Step 3) and they looked a bit odd but I was able to easily “sculpt” them into the more rounded triangular shapes that affect the impact of Tau.

Tomàs illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Tau below and as he points out, “Note that a grid of regular hexagons is not necessary.” Wonky grids are always fun to explore 🙂

Share your tangle on TanglePatterns

Everyone is invited to share patterns on TanglePatterns.com, you do NOT need to be a CZT. In order for patterns to be considered for publication they must be submitted to me by email. In other words you have to let me know about them.

For a submission to qualify as a tangle it must be a genuine pattern (“a regularly repeated arrangement, especially a design made from repeated lines, shapes, or colours on a surface”) and not the repetition of “a thing to draw”.

From The Book of Zentangle:

“Keep it Non-representational. Zentangle artwork is intended to be non-representational. Zentangle’s elemental strokes are also non-representational.

We don’t teach complex elements such as hearts, stars or flowers. Tangles are also non-representational.”

Remember that tangles never start with pencil planning.

"A tangle has no pre-planning with pencil guidelines, grids or dots, no erased lines."

When your examples include additional tangles from the site, please list them in your email. (This saves me time and my memory some wear and tear.)

If your pattern is posted on your blog, attach your steps and tile JPGs to your email and be sure your email includes the direct URL so I can link to it.

And remember, to quote Zentangle's co-founders Rick and Maria: tangles should be "magical, simple and easy to create", non-objective patterns of repetitive strokes that are easy to teach and offer a high degree of success to tanglers of all ages.
