How to draw NITLEE

Zentangle pattern: Nitlee. Image © Linda Farmer and TanglePatterns.com. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. You may use this image for your personal non-commercial reference only. The unauthorized pinning, reproduction or distribution of this copyrighted work is illegal.Hello there and welcome back!

I hope Thanksgiving was lovely and I’m delighted to have your company on this Black Friday – while the world is out shopping, we tangle! 🙂

Today we have a cool and curvaceous tangle called Nitlee to explore and it’s from Illinois CZT Julie Tiu who also shared her Wikpik tangle with us some time ago.

Nitlee joins the type of tangles on the site gathered together with the tag ogee grid. (Scroll down the page for a free download and tips for drawing ogee and other grids.) There are countless ways to decorate the curvy spaces of an ogee grid, this particular one uses the Zentangle® peppering technique. Although Julie does include two peppering-free options as well.

Julie writes,

The inspiration for Nitlee comes from a knit sweater I saw. I wish I took a picture of it, but I wasn’t in a good spot. The sweater had a beautiful lace and cable pattern that I haven’t quite been able to draw just yet.

The steps show a pattern that could easily be changed out as shown in the examples. With auras and shading Nitlee could have a sea-creature vibe. It could also be a ribbon-type tangle for a border.

Julie illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Nitlee below. Her first tile features Nitlee with the Zentangle-originals Mythograph, Zinger, Fragment T-3 from The Zentangle Primer, and Floo-ish variation. Julie’s second tile includes Nitlee with Hollis and Moon Pie.

Thus patterns that are drawings of a recognizable naturalistic or actual object, figure, or scene, are not tangles. A pattern is not always a tangle — here's what makes a tangle.
