Happy Friday to you, and what a lovely new Zentangle®-original tangle we have to explore today. In fact we have two!
Hollis was deconstructed by Zentangle co-founder Rick Roberts based on a collection of Chinese pottery he had photographed in a museum in Munich:
“We paid particular attention because we were going to Taipei and Seoul for Zentangle events. We wanted to introduce a new tangle on that trip that had roots in that part of the world.“
As for Hollis, the tangle’s name,
“Hollis Littlecreek was the man who taught me many things including how to make and play the Native American style flute. Hollis shared many gifts throughout his life. We trust this gift of hollis will bring you some creative joy and comfort and you explore what it has to offer.”
Hollis was first introduced on October 3rd at a CZT-only event — zenAgain Asia in Taipei, Taiwan — and at the same time it was released to all CZTs in our private newsletter.
As CZTs we are encouraged to teach the tangles we learn from our newsletters, however we are all asked not to publish the steps online or elsewhere until they are publicly released in the Zentangle newsletter. Hollis was just released in the latest newsletter so now we can all enjoy exploring it.
Rick illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Hollis here in the Zentangle newsletter where he explains more of the tangle’s background and includes images of the inspirational pottery. Naturally there are many beautiful Zentangle tiles featuring Hollis as well.
As Rick points out, the corners where Hollis forks present opportunities to add further embellishments, including the tangle Maria added which she called Moon Pie. You’ll see lovely examples of Moon Pie in the newsletter. In my Hollis example on the right I embellished the little nooks using a simple Crescent Moon fragment.
