How to draw OILE

Also tomorrow — in sports news 😉 — the grueling 3,405.6 km, 21-stage 2023 Tour de France begins with the Grand Départ this year taking place in the Basque area of Bilbao**, Spain. Yep, it’s time for my annual July armchair trip through the beautiful scenery of France and Spain along with enjoying some pretty amazing professional athletic performances. Can’t wait!! **(“Famed for the Frank Gehry-designed Guggenheim Museum Bilbao.”)

Okay. So today, sharing some Canada Day love, we have a new heart-based tangle from Malaysian CZT Sharon Wong and Oile is her first on the site.

Sharon introduces herself and shares how she discovered the Zentangle Method™ and what it means to her.

I am from Malaysia and I discovered Zentangle in July 2020, during the pandemic. I was feeling bored and anxious at home, and I saw some beautiful Zentangle art on social media. I was curious and fascinated by the patterns and the process. I decided to give it a try and joined some online classes and groups where I learned more.

Zentangle has been a wonderful gift for me. It has helped me relax, focus, and enjoy the present moment. It has unleashed my creativity and confidence. I have created many Zentangles and ZIA (Zentangle-inspired art) with different themes, styles, and colors. I have shared my Zentangles with my family, friends, and online followers. They have given me positive feedback and encouragement.

I became a CZT in March 2021 after attending the online seminar by Conzentric, an official partner of Zentangle. It was an amazing experience that taught me not only the techniques and methods of Zentangle, but the philosophy and values behind it. I learned how to appreciate the beauty of imperfection, the joy of simplicity, and the power of gratitude. I also met many wonderful people from different countries who share the same passion for Zentangle.

I am very proud and happy to be a CZT. I want to use my skills and knowledge to teach others how to create Zentangles and enjoy the benefits of this art form. I want to continue creating my own tangles and ZIA, and share them with the world. I hope to inspire more people to discover Zentangle and join this amazing community.

Zentangle has been a life-changing discovery for me. It has brought me relaxation, creativity, personal growth, and connected love. I am very grateful and appreciative for Zentangle and the Zentangle community.

She explains the meaning of her tangle Oile:

“Oile” is my first deconstructed tangle. It means “love” in Cantonese and it symbolizes connected love in different forms.

I created this tangle during a Valentine’s event led by CZT Marguerite Samama from The Netherlands.

Oile resembles a pretzel, but also a heart. When two or more pretzels are joined together, they symbolize connected love. This can represent romantic love, family love, or friendship love.

While tangling Oile you might notice the secret to linking them is to first make all your “touching” heart shapes (Steps 1-2) in a ribbon or frame – you can even subtly overlap them as Sharon has done below – and then make the strokes that link them (Steps 3-5).

Sharon illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Oile below where she includes a sweet ZIA Zendala with Oile embellished with Printemps, auras, weighting and a Beadlines variation.

Thus patterns that are drawings of a recognizable naturalistic or actual object, figure, or scene, are not tangles. A pattern is not always a tangle — here's what makes a tangle. TIP: tangles never start with pencil planning.
