Hello there my tangling friends!
Welcome back for a brand new week of fresh tangle inspiration and relaxing creativity.
Today’s super easy Sea Urchin tangle is from Italian tangler Loretta Botticini who recently shared her Wheel-Pin with us.
First, of course, I had to take a wee diversion to learn about sea urchins. Did you know their roe is a culinary delicacy in many countries?
According to Wikipedia,
Sea urchins are spiny, globular echinoderms in the class Echinoidea. About 950 species of sea urchin live on the seabed of every ocean and inhabit every depth zone from the intertidal seashore down to 5,000 meters (16,000 ft; 2,700 fathoms). The spherical, hard shells (tests) of sea urchins are round and covered in spines.
… Sea urchins are members of the phylum Echinodermata, which also includes sea stars, sea cucumbers, sand dollars, brittle stars, and crinoids.
… The name urchin is an old word for hedgehog, which sea urchins resemble; they have archaically been called sea hedgehogs.
… sea urchin roe or corals, are culinary delicacies in many parts of the world, especially Japan. In Japan, sea urchin is known as uni, and its roe can retail for as much as ¥40,000 ($360) per kilogram; it is served raw as sashimi or in sushi, with soy sauce and wasabi. … In Mediterranean cuisines, Paracentrotus lividus is often eaten raw, or with lemon, and known as ricci on Italian menus where it is sometimes used in pasta sauces. It can also flavour omelettes, scrambled eggs, fish soup, mayonnaise, béchamel sauce for tartlets, the boullie for a soufflé.
Clearly Sea Urchin the tangle shares DNA with the Zentangle®-original Printemps, with the addition of a simple embellishment. It might also share DNA with Sanyukta Saxena’s Jolly. You’ll notice for my example I restrained myself from adding “stoppers” to the pointy spiny bits 😉 but that would definitely make it a fancy embellishment, even if only on a few of them.
Loretta illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Sea Urchin below and she demonstrates it in a simple, minimalist monotangle. I can visualize them aligned to form a ribbon-style tangle in addition to its natural scattered format to fill a section in a tile.

What a sweet and easy tangle to enjoy! I love having spiral based tangles in my inventory and this was just added <3 And so much fun to embellish, as Linda noted!
This is also a Native American “Sun Symbol.” Often seen in conjunction with Kokopelli, in tribal art (Zuni, Hopi, Pueblo, etc) of the “Four Corners” area of the American Southwest.
