Hi again friends, welcome back for another week of creative tangles. Thanks as always for keeping me company on this fun Zentangle® journey 🙂
Today’s sweet and graceful Calliewags tangle is from Canadian CZT Tabitha Bedoukian and it’s her third on the site, “It has a heart variation that seems seasonally appropriate.”
As with Rosie from last week, Calliewags is inspired by a beloved pet.
Tabitha explains,
This tangle developed as I was drawing Hollis, which I love.
I was working out an idea in my sketchbook, doing a “quick” version when I realized that I loved what I’d just drawn. So in a sense, this is a simplified version of Hollis, and yet it stands on its own.
It also reminds me of how our new puppy runs seemingly in every direction at once! Her name is Callie, nicknamed Calliewags since her tail is always going too (and she’s kind of a scallywag!).
This tangle grows organically in every direction, but can be corralled into growing in one general direction if desired. Just like the puppy!
She shares some tips for tangling Calliewags:
The key is that every line follows the curve of the previous line, then curves away, exactly like Hollis, but they end in a “topper” of your choosing instead of doing the u-turn to come back.
No line touches another, and no line crosses another.
It looks particularly nice if the lines are about the same distance apart.
Shading isn’t really necessary, but if you do want to, I tend to add some lightly where the lines are longer. Or in the spirals, if you’re doing that.
A little line-weight adds some drama too, if desired.
For my example of Calliewags, I used the bottom drawing on Tabitha’s steps illustration as my guide.
Tabitha illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Calliewags below where she includes tips and shows some ways to add “different ends for different looks and themes“.
As you enjoy any of the tangles on the site, please leave a comment of thanks and encouragement to show the artists you appreciate them for sharing their creativity to inspire yours. Your thanks helps motivate them to continue to share! And please share a link to your favorite tangles on social media. Thanks!

Super fun tangle! So light , airy and beautiful!
I really like this tangle. So many possibilities. Thank you
i love the spacious and flowing action of Calliewags. I love the diversity of the tips shown. The tips can be adapted and used for any holiday season! I can see me using these tangles on my notecards.
Tabitha, thanks for this one. I love it. The name really drew me in as we have had several cats called Scallywag in our home. Shortened to Scally. I can see me using this one a lot as it’s a great way to keep a light airy feel to a tile.
So much fun. thanks for sharing.
Great new tangle! As others have said, it’s light and airy with lots of possible variations. The freedom it offers makes it very fun to play with! I just love it – thank you!
Wow, love this tangle! With so many options and ideas provided by you – this will keep me entertained for awhile. Thank you!
