How to draw TISSOOOH!

Zentangle pattern: Tissoooh! Image © Tomàs Padrós. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. You may use this image for your personal non-commercial reference only. The unauthorized pinning, reproduction or distribution of this copyrighted work is illegal.Hello my tangling friends!

Today we have another tangle deconstruction from Spanish CZT Tomàs Padrós. Tissoooh! is his 23rd on the site, most recently we explored his Snack tangle.

Tomàs writes that Tissoooh! is “one of my most elaborate and ambitious proposals“. In place of my customary tangle example today I’ve shown his own Tissoooh! example showing one of its many possibilities but this pentagon example features the shape Tomàs favors.

Tomàs writes a detailed explanation of how he named his tangle together with lots of tips to guide us in tangling Tissoooh!

Tissoooh! … is a five-step tangle conceived to consider finished from the second step, offering new possibilities at each step. This idea amused me. In all cases, it recalls a possible organic tissue or the folds of a fabric. Hence the name. The exclamation is for its ambitious approach.

In any case, the tangle starts with a polygon, the most suitable being the triangle, the square, the pentagon (my favorite) and the hexagon. I advise some fluidity and slight curvature on the sides of those polygons. That flexible aspect is ideal to satisfy the appearance of a fabric or tissue.

The possibilities of variations are very high but I hope this is enough to invite you to explore, have fun and be surprised. Tissoooh!

For those who like to explore more challenging tangles, this is indeed an ambitious proposal. Tissoooh! should keep you focused and entertained for a while.

Tomàs illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing the pentagon version of Tissoooh! below, “To demonstrate the potential of the tangle, I show the pentagon in a deconstruction where you can see the different possible finishes of the tangle at each step you want to stop at.

Here Tomàs demonstrates “the deconstructions of the triangle and the square, with their subtle peculiarities”.

The hexagon is very similar to the pentagon but my advice in this case is not to slightly lengthen the auras of the third step, or the points of the star that forms in the fourth step will be distorted too much.

Tomàs includes four example Zentangles below and describes each one with words of advice.

In the first you can see a two step Tissoooh!. I love the look of this tangle at this stage with its slightly curved extensions reminiscent of folds in fabric. The best way to organize this tangle is by arranging the pentagons in an imaginary triangular grid (you can dot the centers creating that grid). This generates a good compositional balance, with equivalent separation spaces.

In the second tile I continue exploring the fabric suggestion incorporating the auras from the third step. In this case, to give softness to the fabric, I have done this step only in pencil, recreating myself in the curvature and length of these auras. My advice in the pentagon is for those auras to curve outward. On the other hand, in the triangle and in the square, it is better to keep them more equidistant from the lines of the second step.

In the third tile I show a four-step Tissoooh! incorporating various polygons (even the variation of a circle) and a few holes that remind me of Membranart, achieving a more organic tissue effect.
Finally I show a five-step Tissoooh! combining a central hexagon and four triangles in the corners. I first drew the central hexagon and then marked four points around it which I made the centers of the triangles.
