Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations just launched in the UK and throughout the Commonwealth so it’s fitting we have a tangle today from the UK.

LONDON (AP) — Four days of celebrations honoring Queen Elizabeth II’s 70 years on the throne kicked off Thursday with a display of British military traditions stretching from the days of horse and cannon to the jet age.

Formal celebrations for the Platinum Jubilee began with Trooping the Color, an annual military review that has marked the sovereign’s official birthday since 1760.

The events over a long holiday weekend in the U.K. are meant to celebrate the monarch’s 70 years of service.

According to Wikipedia, “This is the first time that any British monarch has celebrated a platinum jubilee.”

Graticula is from UK CZT Lucy Farran and it’s her tenth on the site. We recently explored her Hammersmith tangle and she has eight more cool ones for you to check out too.

Lucy writes,

Graticula was inspired by a pattern on the book cover of the book ‘Meanwhile (the picture of a lady)‘ by H.G. Wells, though by the time I had deconstructed a tangle from the pattern, it looked a bit different.

Lucy included an image of the book cover which I’ve trimmed down a little, and I agree Graticula turned out a lot different 😉 …

I have called this one Graticula, which is a Portmanteau of Gratitude and Reticula, but also means ‘little grating’ in Latin.

If I might offer a tip or two on this tangle – in Steps 1 through 3, observe the spacing between the triangles because those spaces become the width of the woven bands. It’s also useful to maintain consistent angles in your triangles so the sides connect in a straight line. Both might sound more difficult than they really are as you’ll discover when you get underway. In my example I notice that I could have allowed a little more space between the columns so the vertical bands are as wide as the rest … (picky picky picky)

Lucy illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Graticula below where she includes three lovely Zentangle tiles featuring her tangle. Lucy notes, “The step out also includes a fragment version, which can be used in different orientations (shown). The examples show it used at different scales.

Thus patterns that are drawings of a recognizable naturalistic or actual object, figure, or scene, are not tangles. A pattern is not always a tangle — here's what makes a tangle. TIP: tangles never start with pencil planning.
