How to draw BUMBLE BALL

It was a very wet weekend here in South Florida as the first “system” of our 2022 storm season hung around for a while. Our hurricane season officially begins on June 1st and ends November 30th. But as we all know, Mother Nature doesn’t stick to any particular schedule any more as our oceans continue to heat up. Fingers crossed we don’t have too much activity this year. I can put up with a bunch of rain! Wind and tornadoes not so much.

Our easy Monday tangle is called Bumble Ball and it’s from Texas CZT Suzanne McNeill.

Bumble Ball first appeared in Suzanne’s 2012 publication, Zentangle 7: Inspiring Circles, Zendalas & Shapes.

As you may be aware, Fox Chapel Publishing (who hold the copyright) and Suzanne have graciously given me permission to post her copyright-protected images on TanglePatterns for your reference.

I learned that Bumble Ball is an actual thing (I lead a sheltered life 😉 ). According to Wikipedia it’s a motorized dog toy:

The toys were popular in the mid 1990s and come in varied colors, including a see-through light-up one and a mini version.

Similar musical toys are also sold for toddlers.

Bumble Ball is fun for tanglers too! It’s easy to tangle and there are lots of ways to play around with solid ink patterns within. I haven’t tried shading it yet but I can imagine that would be cool too.

Suzanne illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Bumble Ball below where she includes a simple variation to explore.

Thus patterns that are drawings of a recognizable naturalistic or actual object, figure, or scene, are not tangles. A pattern is not always a tangle — here's what makes a tangle. TIP: tangles never start with pencil planning.
