How to draw SQUARE FLOWER

Today’s Square Flower tangle is from Indian tangler Sumita Roy and it’s her first on the site.

Sumita writes,

I am Sumita from Kolkata, India and a Zentangle® enthusiast, tangling for about two years.

Thanks to Linda for this site, for tangle patterns, tanglers names, tangle enhancers, strings, new techniques and gratitude towards all who have contributed in the very being of this website. It has binded us all together more so in the pandemic.

Square flower, comes from me being a Maths tutor, to make geometric design, like Alhambra without grid or graph or scale.

The Celtic feel is quite interesting as the pattern gradually unfolds with every stroke. It can be as a colourful glass painting, petals, leaves to 3d to jewellery pattern. A scope for adding fillers in the centre and border patterns on petal edges. Shading to show the overlapping petals.

The name was inspired by its Square extensions and yet organic so Square Flower.

I’m not sure where I’ve been, but until I looked up where Sumita is from I did not know that Kolkata is what I’ve always known as Calcutta. As Wikipedia explains:

Kolkata is the primary business, commercial, and financial hub of Eastern India and the main port of communication for North-East India. According to the 2011 Indian census, Kolkata is the seventh-most populous city in India, with a population of 4.5 million residents within the city limits, and a population of over 14.1 million residents in the Kolkata Metropolitan Area. It is the third-most populous metropolitan area in India. … The Port of Kolkata is India’s oldest operating port and its sole major riverine port.

Kolkata is regarded as the Cultural Capital of India.

The word Kolkata derives from Kôlikata, the Bengali name of one of three villages that predated the arrival of the British.

The discovery and archaeological study of Chandraketugarh, 35 kilometres (22 mi) north of Kolkata, provide evidence that the region in which the city stands has been inhabited for over two millennia. Kolkata’s recorded history began in 1690 with the arrival of the English East India Company, which was consolidating its trade business in Bengal.

As for our Friday tangle …

I offer two suggestions for tangling Sumita’s Square Flower. The first is that you don’t want to put the dots too close to the angled brackets in Step 1, they need a bit of air so you have room for what comes next. And the second tip is that when you reach Step 3, keep an eye on the center “flower” shape your curving strokes are creating.

Sumita illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Square Flower below. On her tile she demonstrates it as a focal tangle and though the scan isn’t clear, you can just see the Zentangle-original Printemps in the background and ‘Nzeppel fills the center area.
