Greetings and a very happy Wednesday to you as we charge towards another new month.
Blissfully, the days are getting noticeably longer, always a very welcome sign that good days are ahead.
Today’s Novu tangle is a Mooka tangleation from tangler Jessica (aka Jake) Dykes, and it’s her first on the site.
Jessica showcases Novu in these lovely detailed bookmarks:
She introduces herself and her tangle,
I am a 73 year old “Tangler,” and lifelong “doodler.” A dabbler in the arts since childhood, but only started tangling in Oct 2018.
After my husband’s death in 2017, I moved from Ohio to CT to be near my daughter, and discovered Zentangle® in a class at the local Senior Center. I’ve been tangling ever since.
Zentangle helped me grieve my husband’s death and weather the many challenges I had to face without him. It also brought me many new friends, and is currently helping me stay calm and sane during this pandemic. For all of that, I am very grateful and appreciative.
I named my pattern Novu (No-voo), from the term “Art NOuVeaU.”
My favorite artist is Alphonse Mucha, and my absolute favorite “go-to” tangle is Mooka (or Flux as drawn by Maria). Novu uses 3 Mookas of varying size, to form a simple, but graceful and elegant design; very reminiscent of jewelry, flatware, textile, and home decor patterns of the Art Nouveau era.
I’ve included a few variations, but I’m sure other tanglers will find even more ways to use it. I hope they enjoy it as much as I do.
Jessica illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Novu below where she also includes several ways to explore her Mooka-inspired tangle.
As you enjoy any of the tangles on the site, please leave a comment of thanks and encouragement to show the artists you appreciate them for sharing their creativity to inspire yours. Your thanks helps motivate them to continue to share! And please share a link to your favorite tangles on social media. Thanks!

- "A Zentangle has no up or down and is not a picture of something, so you have no worries about whether you can draw a hand, or a duck. You always succeed in creating a Zentangle." Thus patterns that are drawings of a recognizable naturalistic or actual object, figure, or scene, are not tangles. A pattern is not always a tangle — here's what makes a tangle. I tried the Novu tangle and love it! Thanks so much!
Jake, your tangle is amazing! I love your story, and Alphonse Mucha is also one of my favorite artists. Thank you for sharing your journey, your age (2 years my junior), and how you are using Zentangle to enhance your life. You are appreciated!
Well done Jessica! I adore your story! You go girl!!!
That is one of my favourite things about zentangle, it’s potential to help heal us, I’ve heard of people going through cancer and chemo, armed with zentangle as a healing tool, I’ve used it on and off for about 4 years, it has helped me recover from domestic violence and helped me cope as a single mother to 3 amazing babies!
so nice thank you
