How to draw SARNIA-CHERIE

Sarnia-Cherie is a perfect, easy Monday tangle and it’s from UK tangler Sarah Harrison. It’s her second tangle on the site.

Sarah shared her Rainbow Bridge with us a few years ago while she was “a Guernsey girl living in Gloucester” but now she’s “back home in Guernsey Channel Islands“.

Her tangle’s name, Sarnia-Cherie, she writes,

… is used as the anthem of Guernsey, one of the Channel Islands.

‘Sarnia’ is a traditional Latin name for the island, hence, the title translates as ‘Dear Guernsey’.

According to the Encyclopædia Britannica,

Guernsey, British crown dependency and island, is the second largest of the Channel Islands.

It is 30 miles (48 km) west of Normandy, France, and roughly triangular in shape. With Alderney, Sark, Herm, Jethou, and associated islets, it forms the Bailiwick of Guernsey. Its capital is St. Peter Port.

… The population is mainly of Norman descent with an admixture of Breton. St. Peter Port and St. Sampson are the main towns.

Dairy farming with the famous Guernsey breed of cattle is largely confined to the high land in the south.

Market gardening is concentrated chiefly in the north, where greenhouses produce tomatoes, flowers, and grapes, mostly exported to England.

… Tourism became an important part of Guernsey’s economy in the 20th century. The house in St. Peter Port in which the French author Victor Hugo resided from 1855 to 1870 is now a museum.

There are YouTube videos of the Sarnia Cherie anthem but I’ll leave that rabbit hole for you to check out. These are the lyrics for the anthem, courtesy of Wikipedia:

Sarnia; dear Homeland, Gem of the sea.
Island of beauty, my heart longs for thee.
Thy voice calls me ever, in waking, or sleep,
Till my soul cries with anguish, my eyes ache to weep.
In fancy I see thee, again as of yore,
Thy verdure clad hills and thy wave beaten shore.
Thy rock sheltered bays, ah; of all thou art best,
I’m returning to greet thee, dear island of rest.

CHORUS

Sarnia Cherie. Gem of the sea.
Home of my childhood, my heart longs for thee.
Thy voice calls me ever, forget thee I’ll never,
Island of beauty. Sarnia Cherie.

I left thee in anger, I knew not thy worth.
Journeyed afar, to the ends of the earth.
Was told of far countries, the heav’n of the bold,
Where the soil gave up diamonds, silver and gold.
The sun always shone, and “race” took no part,
But thy cry always reached me, its pain wrenched my heart.
So I’m coming home, thou of all art the best.
Returning to greet thee, dear island of rest.

I can understand why Sarah is so happy to have returned to her childhood home …

Sarah’s tangle is in honor of her home. Sarnia-Cherie is a fun ribbon-style tangle that’s easy to tangle and adds a delicate touch to a tile. Back-to-back ribbons, whether matching or not, make a very pretty background.

Sarah illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Sarnia-Cherie below where she features it in a monotangle demonstrating some simple variations to explore.

Thus patterns that are drawings of a recognizable naturalistic or actual object, figure, or scene, are not tangles. A pattern is not always a tangle — here's what makes a tangle. Nice tangle, it reminded me of Bird on a Wire which I often use but with a difference. My cousin lives in Guernsey and she is currently doing the 30 Bays in 30 Days challenge in Guernsey.

  • May Loo

Interesting name for the tangle. There is a Sarnia, Ontario here in Canada. Wonder if there is any connection between that and the name in Guernsey.

  • Milde Weiss

Thank you, Sarah! The Channel Islands have always fascinated me, and I wish I could visit there. Sarnia-Cherie reminds me of waves, and I can just imagine that water and waves are never far from you. I’ll try out this pretty tangle soon.

  • Allison Arts

Sarnia in Ontario Canada is the sister city to Port Huron MI, as the comment above says about it being a Canadian town. We Michiganders are often in Sarnia when the border is open and we can cross freely back and forth, which we’ve done for many many years, until now! I have an American Francophone friend who lives in St Malo. One of her best friends, whom I’ve met, is a charming Channel Islander living on and from Guernsey. Lovely Brit accent, impeccable French, and American English! I believe there’s a ferry between St Malo and Guernsey?

BTW, the tangle is lovely!! Congratulations on being added!

    • Sarah

Yes there is a ferry between us and France. We have our own language which is unfortunately dying out 🙁 It’s called Patois.
      Glad you like the tangle.

  • Rosemary Turpin

Thank you for the beautiful tangle, Sarah, and I will be trying it out really soon. And thank you, Linda, for the wonderful article on Guernsey – I learned a lot, including exactly where it is! I collect stamps from several Channel Islands, but I had never actually looked at a MAP – now I have, thanks to you!

  • Rosemary Turpin

I can see that Sarnia-Cherie is sort of related to the pattern “Gnarly”, which I use frequently for drama in my tangles!

  • Susan Achter

What a fun looking tangle. Tried it little and then a larger one in blue and orange. Thank you so much for sharing. Love it.
