How to draw SPRIGERZ

Zentangle pattern: Sprigerz. Image © Linda Farmer and TanglePatterns.com. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. You may use this image for your personal non-commercial reference only. The unauthorized pinning, reproduction or distribution of this copyrighted work is illegal.Continuing with the theme of Spring, today’s Sprigerz tangle is from CZT Brenda Campbell and it’s her first on the site.

Sprigerz starts with a Printemps (Spring!) swirl and grows from there with auras and embellishments.

Brenda introduces herself and explains how Sprigerz grew,

I am a CZT from class 29 (June 2017). I teach the Zentangle Method™ in my home studio in Hereford Arizona, a little town near the border with Mexico and also in the Heart of the Old West; Close to Bisbee and Tombstone!

I didn’t really set out to deconstruct a new tangle. I love to draw organic tangles like Mooka, Zinger, Fescu, etc. and I just started with a spiral to the top. It was not planned but I kept going. I added an aura around it and then I added a large petal shape and when I held it at arms length for a look I decided it was complete.

I knew that I had to keep drawing it and playing with variations so I did. For about a week I drew monotangles of Sprigerz. Interestingly, the first several looked alike. I didn’t really vary it at all. Silly me! I kept playing with it and felt like I finally had enough samples to put Sprigerz out there.

Brenda illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Sprigerz here on her blog where she features Sprigerz and versions of it in a wide range of Zentangle® tile shapes and ZIAs.

Thus patterns that are drawings of a recognizable naturalistic or actual object, figure, or scene, are not tangles. A pattern is not always a tangle — here's what makes a tangle. Zen-like patience could be required 😉

There are fledgling starlings in the nest right outside my window, and (hopefully taken as I mean it, as a kind, sort of humorous, analogy) Brenda’s initial stepout, with the “beak” on it, makes me think of the baby birds 🙂

I’ll have to give this one a “(s)whirl,” very much enjoying curvy, curly tangles!

  • This is a fun one! Brenda, I want to compliment you on your blog. It’s fresh and pretty, interesting to explore and up-to-date! That last one isn’t always the case. Thanks for sharing Sprigerz – my kind of tangle!

  • HeidiSue

Having lots of fun with this! Many petals, many tendrils! And such a swirl. I’ve got a pageful in my sketchbook already, and gonna play some more. Thanks for such a fun tangle!

  • Maxine Erickson

I love spirals I love leaf shape and petals, whats more fun and in the moment than this. Love it.

  • Now, I’m drawing sprigerz. Thank you for the lovely pattern.

  • Wow! Thank you all for the kind words! I can’t wait to see what you all create with Sprigerz.
