How to draw FITZI

Zentangle pattern: Fitzi. Image © Linda Farmer and TanglePatterns.com. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. You may use this image for your personal non-commercial reference only. The unauthorized pinning, reproduction or distribution of this copyrighted work is illegal. It appears I have a thing for ribbon-style tangles this week and as Azteka demonstrates, they also make excellent fill tangles. (For more on a similar idea see this 2011 Zentangle blog post.)

The lovely organic, Spring-like Fitzi tangle is shared with us by Canadian CZT Bunny (Frances) Wright and it’s her 10th tangle on the site.

Bunny writes,

Originally I had a different name for this pattern but, after a recent visit to my dear friend Mary, whose second name is Fitzgerald, I decided to name this pattern after her. We met in high school and were Girl Guides together.

The thing I love most about this pattern is the rhythm it sets up as you draw it.

The unique feature of Fitzi is that it can be drawn in one continuous line, and this produces that lovely rhythm. Extra bits may be added as desired.

I’ve shown the steps and also show it as a border/ribbon and with a different ‘leaf’ feature.

Also, shading can really make it ‘pop’.

Fitzi is an easy tangle and if you alter the shapes of the ‘leaves’ as Bunny shows in her steps, it can take on a Verdigogh-like look without the more complex “drawn behind” layers.

Bunny illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Fitzi below. As you’ll note in Step 1 the continuous line begins with a smallish orb off which the first “leaf” springs. Bunny features Fitzi in a pretty monotangle and a tile surrounded with stripes of various tangles including several of her own, Rita Nikolajeva’s Isla, Anita Aspfors Westin’s Natti, and a couple of Zentangle®-originals.
