How to draw TUPI

Zentangle pattern: Tupi. Image © Linda Farmer and TanglePatterns.com. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. You may use this image for your personal non-commercial reference only. The unauthorized pinning, reproduction or distribution of this copyrighted work is illegal.Tupi is the second of our two related tangles today from Belgian CZT Ria Matheussen.

First we began with Tupuk, and here we have its companion tangle Tupi.

Ria writes,

While drawing Tupuk, I have found a nice variation on this tangle and called it Tupi.

Tupi is really very easy and pleasant to draw and gives also many possibilities to colour, to embellish and to vary.

I have drawn regularly: one small form followed by a bigger one, again one small form and a bigger one.

When you are drawing this way, the second row forms an opposite of the first row but you can draw it irregularly too to become a different result.

Tupi is very nice in combination with other tangles but can also be used as a monotangle.

These two tangles brought to mind 1950’s retro furniture and fabric designs which had a very unique look to them. Imagine my surprise when I did a search to see if I could find any examples and came up with this “Retro Mid Century Wall Tapestry“!

Ria illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Tupi below and demonstrates it in a ZIA with suggestions for variations, and the tangles she notes on her illustration.

Thus patterns that are drawings of a recognizable naturalistic or actual object, figure, or scene, are not tangles. A pattern is not always a tangle — here's what makes a tangle. Schitterend werk , deze vind ik nog specialer dan Tupuk.
Ik ga hem meteen gebruiken .

Google Translate: Beautiful work, I find this even more special than Tupuk.
I’m going to use it right away.

  • Oh Luc, wat ben ik blij met deze commentaar. Ik zelf vind ook Tupi de leukste van de twee, je kan er 1001 kanten mee op.
Ik wens je veel succes en stuur je hartelijke groeten

Google translates: Oh Luc, how happy I am with this comment. I myself also find Tupi the nicest of the two, you can put 1001 sides on it.
I wish you good luck and send you warm greetings

  • A very nice pattern. I’m seeing a sound wave when I look at the variation with the black background. Love it. I’m going to use that in a future animation experiment.

  • Dank je wel Bram, ook ik vind dit patroontje het leukst van de twee, je kan er zoveel variaties op maken en het past overal bij. Ik ben erg benieuwd naar je toepassing ervan! Succes!!!

Google Translate (I’m not sure it understood this time!): Thank you Bram, I also like this pattern the two of you, you can make so many variations and it fits everywhere. I am very curious about your application! Good luck!!!
