Today’s lovely Safflower tangle is another deconstruction by UK tangler Sarah Fowler and it’s her fifth tangle on the site.
Sarah writes she was inspired by “the grass head i found in my garden back in June.”
I have long mental arguments with myself with patterns that appear more representational than abstract and thus would not be a tangle for Zentangle®. On the whole I tend to stick to Maria’s requirements for a tangle (“A pattern is not always a tangle“) because this site is about Zentangle.
Safflower kind of straddles the line and sits in a bit of a gray area. But it’s pretty and heaven knows we can use a little pretty around us with all the distressing news we’ve been getting lately. So we’re going with it and I’m confident you can work Safflower‘s motif into an abstract design on your tiles with “no right side up”.
Sarah illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Safflower below and she includes a delightful monotangle on a classic white Zentangle tile with subtle Safflower variations and some Hollibaugh “drawing behind”.
As you enjoy any of the tangles on the site, please leave a comment of thanks and encouragement to show the artists you appreciate them for sharing their creativity to inspire yours.

- "A Zentangle has no up or down and is not a picture of something, so you have no worries about whether you can draw a hand, or a duck. You always succeed in creating a Zentangle." Thus patterns that are drawings of a recognizable naturalistic or actual object, figure, or scene, are not tangles. A pattern is not always a tangle — here's what makes a tangle. What a lovely tangle! With some shading it can fill the space beautifully! Well done and thanks for sharing!
So pretty! Can’t wait to try it. Thank you, Sarah and Linda!
Linda: if Maria Thomas is allowed Icanthis, I think Sarah is definitely allowed her beautiful Safflower! Thank you for this lovely tangle, Sarah, I’ve really enjoyed drawing it.
This is pretty. ..and yes, a little “on the line”…BUT, what immediately comes to mind is Bronx Cheer..That tangle sure looks like a berry !!!
This is an organic beauty!! Fun & easy to draw, it doubles as a focus tangle AND a lovely border. I think this one will show up in many of my future pieces. Thank you, Saffy!
Me too love this beautiful organic pattern, looks great and is easy to draw!
This is really pretty and not that hard to do. It would make a beautiful focal point on a tangle with more “organic” tangles in the background. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you so much for your lovely comments.
This is so good! I already know I’ll use it a lot. Looking forward to tangling it with bLooming-butter…
It’s so easy and yet so exquisite! I love it, thank you for sharing with us.
