Pach is a great Monday tangle from Judy Okawa. Judy shared her Infinity tangle with us this summer and she’s also contributed a String that introduced us to the Japanese art of kintsugi. Do check out Judy’s String for more on that very interesting subject.
Pach is oh-so-easy and it offers so many opportunities for embellishing to personalize your own version.
Judy writes,
“I recently saw a picture of a paper chain, the type that we used to make at Christmas time with strips of colored construction paper, formed into rings – The chain formed an interesting abstract pattern, so I wanted to try to deconstruct it, and Pach (for Paper Chain) is what I came up with….
Note that the small curved line added in Step 4 is ‘drawn under’, so as to complete the ring on the opposite side.“
In my Pach explorations I first used Step 1 as the paired rice shapes Judy demonstrates. Then I remembered how the Zentangle®-original Zenith starts out and I used that method, shown here.
There’s usually more than one way to tackle a tangle 😉 Like many other tangles, Pach comes into its own with a touch of shading.
Judy illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Pach below and she features it in a pretty Zentangle® monotangle. Imagine all the possibilities for adding other tangles within Pach to create a fancy chain.
As you enjoy any of the tangles on the site, please do leave a comment of thanks and encouragement to show the artists you appreciate them for sharing their creativity to inspire yours.

- "A Zentangle has no up or down and is not a picture of something, so you have no worries about whether you can draw a hand, or a duck. You always succeed in creating a Zentangle." Oh, this is so smart! Very festive, so grab your colored pencils, tanglers! Thanks Judy!
How clever! I love that it has so many possibilities as you point out, thanks both for sharing. Merry Christmas!
I love this one! Thank you Judy and Linda!
SUPERBE
An original, easy but wonderful new tangle! Thank you very much for sharing.
I`m definitely going to try this one, for several reasons – I love ribbon tangles, it looks easy to draw, and it LOOKS complicated! Thank you, Judy!
Thank you Judy for a nice holiday tangle and reminding me of the paper chains I made tons of as a kid. I know I’ll do lots of tangled chains with this one. Merry Christmas all!
Judy. A chain pattern has always looked so intimidating to me. Looking at your step outs I think I can do this! It is very pretty. Thank you Judy for sharing and thank you Linda for posting. Merry Christmas to all! Nancy
Thanks for that. It does a beautiful paper chain that reminds me of the days when our children spend hours assembling them for the tree every year.
Thank you everyone for your comments! Wishing you all a very happy holiday!
Love this! It reminds me of the paper chains that we use to make to put on our Christmas tree when we were kids! TFS

Really enjoyed trying this tangle. Easy, but looked complicated for that Wow factor. Takes me back to when I was a kid making the paper ones. Thanks for sharing.
Beautiful pattern! It brings back many memories of grade school and decorating Christmas tree’s. Thank you for sharing!
Judy. I love tangles that look hard to draw–like where to begin drawing this–and then your deconstruction makes it so simple! To me, it seems like knowing a secret to Zentangle that no one else knows. I think that is something that makes Zentangle cool. So, thank you for sharing Pach with us and I love your Infinity too. A beautiful pattern! Thank you Linda, as always, for letting us enjoy the talents of others. Nancy
Just tried this and love how easy it is for such an intricate look! Thanks Linda and Judy!
Thanks so much for your comments – I really appreciate getting your reactions and feedback!
I can’t wait to draw it!
