Tangle Refresher 141 – Veterans Day and RIP Leonard Cohen

Tangle Refresher!Today, November 11th, is observed here in the USA as Veterans Day, and Remembrance Day (or Poppy Day) in Canada, the UK and many other countries.

Last year on this special day I covered quite a bit of background about this annual observance so I won’t go over that again — though personally I was very touched once again revisiting the remarkable Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red art installation and thinking about what it represents. I sincerely hope you take time to check it out too.

Suffice it to say we salute and honor our Veterans, not just on this day but every day, for their service to our countries and for their personal sacrifices that ensure the freedoms we all enjoy. God bless them each and every one.

RIP Leonard

And lastly, so very sad to learn of the passing earlier this week of the legendary, eloquent Canadian poet and songwriter, Leonard Cohen. The New Yorker Magazine published a wonderful lengthy piece about Leonard just a couple of weeks ago. In the following video from his 2008 concert in London, Leonard performs his Anthem. “There is a crack in everything, that’s how the light gets in.

RIP Leonard Cohen. I am lucky I was able to see him perform when he was in Oakland a few years ago!

Linda, I want to thank you for this wonderful video of Leonard Cohen. A very fitting tribute. And today I saw that Leon Russell just passed also. And only 74. I feel like I’ve slipped into an alternate universe with all that’s happened lately and other things that have happened around me this last week. The song on the video is so perfect – “There is a crack in everything, that’s how the light gets in.” This gives me some solace.

  • Thank you, Linda, for posting this clip. Thank you, Leonard, for all the beauty and wisdom you gave us through your music and poetry.

  • Rosemary Turpin

Yes, this has indeed been a week fraught with feeling – what with the new President-elect and protests against him, Remembrance Day (as we call it in Canada, and the death of Leonard Cohen on Monday. I hope next week is a happier one for everybody.
