Undu is more of a technique than a tangle per se, but it’s a good one. A super simple tangle pattern that turns out different each time you draw it and it’s an excellent exercise to practice your Zentangle® auras.
You may be surprised to learn there’s actually a simple logic to drawing Undu‘s randomness and it’s a very engaging tangle to draw. Undu was “named so because it’s very undulating.” Undu starts out similar to Suzanne McNeill’s River but then Undu diverges, quite literally.
Undu is his first tangle on the site from young Daniel Lamothe, who writes he’s “currently in the tortuous years of ‘teenagerhood’ “. Some time ago Daniel shared his personal story about how Zentangle helps with his ADHD and anger management issues and he shares his Zentangle-inspired creations on his blog.
Undu “is pretty easy and forgiving, although it definitely requires some focus if you want to get all the auras juuuuuust right.” He also notes Undu looks quite bold with some of its lines filled in. I added a bit of shading to my example although it’s hard to see.
Daniel illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Undu here on his blog, where his final example includes the bold look of filling in some of the lines.

Love it and what an entertaining blog!!!
I love it! Daniel, you did good. I’m going to go use Undu right now. 😀
It was such a lovely surprise opening up my email and seeing this in the inbox! Thanks so much for including my tangle on your wonderful site! ^_^
Great drawing! I love “maze-y” drawings, very much enjoying drawing optical illusions and mazes along with tangles, so this one will add much to that joy.
I tried this and really had fun with it! Thanks so much for sharing with us! Keep up the great creations too!
fingerprints, swirls of water, contour lines, ripples on sand….the list is endless ! But whatever you see it as, the Tangle is GREAT, and i LOVE it ! Thank you !
Such a simple one!! I love the simplicity of it. Kinda reminded me of Diva Dance and its variations. I was looking for “line” patterns to do my next design. This is perfect.
Thanks Daniel!
This one looks like fun! Thanks for sharing. I’m off to try this with my grandkids.
Thanks,
Lynda
Just wonderful!
Daniel, congrats on getting your tangle on Tangle Patterns! I really love the look of this tangle. I know I will enjoy it because I love drawing lines!! I’ll let you know where it takes me!! Have an awesome day!! :0) Annette
I love this. So much fun and so relaxing. I just did a whole page of Undu in my sketchbook and was sorry when I ran out of page. 😉 Will definitely be using this.
It is a very nice tangle, I just discovered the pattern and I love it! Thank you for sharing and wish you a lot of tangle pleasure!
