What do you get when you blend the Zentangle®-original tangles Ahh and Fescu?
Pufff! (Hey, it’s a blentangle!)
As always, the simplest tangles are the most fun to play with and I think you’ll find Pufff just such a tangle pattern. It comes to us from the Cleveland-area Lakeland OH CZT, Judy Montgomery from the ninth (IX) training seminar. This is Judy’s first tangle on the site.
She writes,
“I am a retired school librarian who didn’t consider herself an artist until I took a Zentangle® class from my friend, Ellen Darby. I attended my first class in March of 2012 and loved it so much I went to Rhode Island in August 2012 to become a Certified Zentangle® Teacher (CZT)! What a thrill to be taught by the originators of Zentangle, Maria Thomas & Rick Roberts!
… I’m so grateful for all the people who share their tangles!
I’ve not created many myself and appreciate that with Zentangle, I don’t have to create my own to be successful.
Pufff is a variation of a design I’ve been drawing for years and I also realize it is a variation of Fescu! Pufff is one you will play with and figure out how you like to draw it.
It pleases me when I draw some of the ‘branches’ behind the others.“
Pufff‘s wavy Fescu “branches” are indeed fun to draw and as Judy notes, you will discover how you like to draw it including weaving some of the branches behind the others. For my example I added a blotch [technical term] of shading to anchor the motifs.
Judy illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Pufff below and demonstrates it in a lovely, minimalist Zentangle.
You can find Judy here on her blog and learn all about the classes she offers.

LOVE it Judy–thanks!
So cute Judy (and just in time for Christmas). Thank you for sharing!
By the way, what is the pattern that goes from bottom left to top right? Really like it!
I would say it’s the official tangle Onamato in a twisted ribbon.
We call the twisted ribbon pattern Wooooooo! It was created by Joan Stark, one of my students here in Cleveland. I see its similarity to Onamato but I think the ribbony part is Joan’s invention. I hope she submits it soon to be considered.
Hi Judy, there is a tutorial on TanglePatterns on how to draw a ribbon, it’s one of the earliest on the site. 🙂
I like those tutorials and hadn’t seen them before, thanks! Joan’s is a good #3, I think! Linda – I LOVE what you do for all of us!
Thanks Judy, be sure to check the TUTORIALS tab on the pink alphabetic menu bar, there’s lots of great stuff there!
This is such a fun, beautiful tangle. Thank you
Such a fun tangle, thanks for sharing
