How to draw YNY

Zentangle pattern: YNY. Image © Linda Farmer and TanglePatterns.com. All rights reserved.Happy Monday and a very special welcome to those of you who found your way here via the ABC television program “The View” on Friday and their brief but tantalizing mention of Zentangle® in the context of managing stress. If you are one of the new folks and haven’t found it already, there’s a helpful post here on how to use this site.

(Who knew that Rosie O’Donnell and Whoopie Goldberg are tanglers?!)

Mindful of the beginners in the crowd today, we have a very easy peasy tangle pattern to jump-start your Zentangle tile. YNY is from Australian CZT Lianne Woods and it’s her first on the site. Lianne lives and teaches the Zentangle® Method near Sydney, in Elanora Heights, New South Wales.

YNY is a very simple grid pattern with surprisingly many opportunities for variations, including my example above. (Maybe I was thinking of Pillows.) Although I’ve drawn my example on a pretty square checkerboard-type grid, remember that with most grid-based tangles you can also draw the grid with “warped” or wavy lines and get some very cool and interesting effects too.

Grid tangles are great because they are so flexible and you can fill a large area easily with striking results in a mindful, focused Zentangle way. That’s my not-so-subtle reminder to take your time and make each stroke deliberately. For many more grid patterns, scroll down to the TANGLES BY TYPE section in the left sidebar and click on the grid tag.

Lianne introduces herself and explains how YNY came to be.

I was one of many people who always believed there was not a creative bone in my body. I would often tell people that I never progressed past drawing stick figures. Then in early 2013 I accidentally stumbled upon Zentangle® and became hooked. Through the Zentangle process I can now produce beautiful works of art and be proud to say ‘I did that!’ I attended the 13th Certified Zentangle Teacher training seminar in November, 2013 so I could share this creative art form with others.

After the seminar I took a trip to New York for a week’s holiday. With my heightened awareness I saw patterns, patterns everywhere and took many photographs. The pattern is called YNY. It is a simple grid based pattern. It was in New York that the inspiration for YNY came about. Why YNY you may ask? My accommodation was at the YMCA West side. On the floor outside of the women’s shower was this pattern. Naturally I took a photo of it and now, finally here is the step out for this pattern. I called it ‘YNY’ as a reminder of my trip to America and staying at the YMCA in New York.

Lianne illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing YNY here on her blog. Her examples demonstrate more ways to vary this tangle.

BTW – did you catch CZT Anna Houston’s excellent tutorial about tangling on glass Christmas ornaments yesterday? Check it out!
