Roscoe is a cool and unusual tangle pattern from Florida tangler Vicki Bassett, of “corset” fame. By that of course I mean Fandango, but she’s also shared the excellent Showgirl and Biscus tangles with us.
Roscoe starts out with a channel grid — that is parallel sets of lines spaced evenly apart creating channels within which the pattern develops. These too can also be curved.
I found Roscoe quite a challenge for my concentration when I reached Steps 4 and 5. In theory it’s very simple, as Vicki explains: “All of your repetitive lines will only be drawn on the right side.” But you really have to focus on whether you’re drawing auras on the bumps or the vertical lines. Once you begin to mix them up you can end up with quite a jumble instead of the interwoven look intended.
And as a reminder there’s no right-side up in Zentangle®, I’ve shown my example with a different orientation from Vicki’s steps.
“When trying to come up with a name – something containing the word ‘right’, my husband, Dave, suggested ‘Roscoe’ which is driving slang for turning right. (Hang a ‘Roscoe’, as opposed to hang a ‘Louie’ for a left hand turn.) I loved it, thanks Dave!
Once you draw the basic framework, draw your auras on the right side of all of the ‘bumps’. Then go back and draw an aura on the right of each vertical line. Keep repeating (alternating – aura on the bumps, aura on the lines) always drawing only on the right until your spaces are filled. Enjoy!“
So just remember to hang a Roscoe, right?
Vicki illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Roscoe here in a delightful Zentangle along with a little Pippin and some of the official tangle Tipple, otherwise known in Zentangle® as orbs.

- "A Zentangle has no up or down and is not a picture of something, so you have no worries about whether you can draw a hand, or a duck. You always succeed in creating a Zentangle." Thus patterns that are drawings of a recognizable naturalistic or actual object, figure, or scene, are not tangles. A pattern is not always a tangle — here's what makes a tangle.
