How to draw ARNIA

Zentangle pattern: Arnia. Image © Linda Farmer and TanglePatterns.com. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. You may use this image for your personal non-commercial reference only. The unauthorized pinning, reproduction or distribution of this copyrighted work is illegal.Arnia is an interesting tangle pattern from Vernon, Connecticut-based CZT Maureen Stott and it’s her first on the site. Maureen is a member of the most recent CZT class, XIII of November 2013.

One of the CZT seminar ‘homework’ assignments was to deconstruct a pattern. I found a beautiful frame around a mirror and when I looked at it closer there was a pattern that I found intriguing. As I worked on it, it looked like beehives, so I named it ARNIA, which is the Italian word for beehive.

In addition to my massage therapy private practice, I teach Access Consciousness classes. I ‘stumbled’ across Zentangle®. I was in Michael’s Craft store waiting to pick up a picture being framed when I saw a book on Zentangle. When I got home I googled Zentangle and started teaching myself how to do the patterns. Knowing that self-learning can lead to bad habits that are difficult to break, I decided that it was in my best interest to take a class. I did and I was hooked!

This is a cropped image from a photograph Maureen shares of the gilded mirror frame inspiring Arnia.

Gilt mirror frame inspiring ArniaMany interesting patterns can be found on picture or mirror frames and in their related architectural crown moldings. However for a pattern to qualify as a tangle for Zentangle® it must be abstract and have “no right side up”. To be on the safe side I used facing “ribbons” of Arnia to create my example.

In her monotangle included with her step-by-step instructions below, Maureen includes several innovative and lovely ways to vary the pattern and shows that even as single ribbons the pattern stands up from any point of view.
