Ansu is a lovely new tangle pattern from Edgewater, Maryland-based CZT Lori Manoogian, and it’s her first on the site.
Ansu is such an easy tangle to draw and you can get into quite a nice rhythm creating the paisley-like motifs. You can use it as an organic fill pattern or create a ribbon-like motif throughout your Zentangle® tile.
I am a graphic designer, mixed media artist and CZT in the Annapolis area. I teach several levels of jewelry design at the Anne Arundel Community College and love to inspire others to uncover their creative side.
I called this Ansu (sounds like On-Sue) as that was the phonetic translation for ‘teardrop’ in Hindi and, since I am a bit of a word nerd, that is how my mind works 🙂
Simple and fun — my only tip is to keep the bottom curves rounded but the inside curves pointed. This contrast brings out that ‘India/paisley’ feel to it. Add orbs or flux to fill or simply leave the inside airy.
Lori illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Ansu below and features it in a Zentangle monotangle.
Here Lori illustrates Ansu in a Zentangle-inspired bookmark.

- "A Zentangle has no up or down and is not a picture of something, so you have no worries about whether you can draw a hand, or a duck. You always succeed in creating a Zentangle." Thus patterns that are drawings of a recognizable naturalistic or actual object, figure, or scene, are not tangles. A pattern is not always a tangle — here's what makes a tangle.
