How to draw QIAN-LONG

Zentangle pattern: Qian-long. Image © Linda Farmer and TanglePatterns.com. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. You may use this image for your personal non-commercial reference only. The unauthorized pinning, reproduction or distribution of this copyrighted work is illegal.Qian-long is CZT Diane Tai’s second tangle pattern on the site. She recently shared her Lantern-Pho tangle with us.

Diane names the pattern Qian-long, “because it looks like long chains.

Interestingly, recently I visited the Qianlong Emperor exhibition at National Palace Museum in Taiwan where all the ancient and national treasures are displayed. Emperor Qianlong is the 6th emperor from the Qing Dynasty, which is the last Dynasty in the Chinese history. Because of this, he holds a significant role in the Chinese history, so I’d like to dedicate this pattern to him.

This is an image of the Emperor Qianlong to whom Diane dedicates her tangle.

The Qianlong Emperor in Ceremonial Armour on Horseback

This is a faithful photographic reproduction of a two-dimensional, public domain work of art.

Qian-long is easy to draw and makes a very pretty border or ribbon tangle. You’ll see I played with an embellishment or two in my example 🙂

Diane illustrates the simple steps for drawing Qian-long below.

And here she demonstrates Qian-long in a monotangle Zentangle® and shows how striking it is drawn as a border in Sakura gold metallic ink on black. Lovely!

    Hi Diane,

Your qian-long design is very attractive….I can see myself putting it on a scarf (as soon as I practice tangling on fabric a bit!) I have on a holiday in China, Vietnam and Cambodia the last 2 summers and love the designs I’ve seen there. Thanks so much for contributing your design…it’s a winner.

    • Diane Tai

      Dear Ruth,

Thank you very much for your nice comment, I deeply appreciate it. I am also happy to know that you like this pattern. There are just countless patterns in different cultures waiting for us to discover…so keep on traveling :)!

  • Sharon Wrench

What a beautiful pattern. The history attached to the design adds a special meaning to the pattern as well. I love gold border on black. It is awesome! Thank you for sharing your pattern.

      Dear Sharon,

I’m happy to know that you enjoy Qianlong and the history attached to it. The gold border on black was done with a Metallic pen, if you like you may try it too! It’s a lot of fun!

  • Sandee. Sack

Diane I like the easy steps you created for Qian-long. I’ll try it out tomorrow on my new set of ensemble tiles. You were such a great roommate during our CZT II training. By the way, how do you pronouce “Qian”?

    • Diane Tai

Hi Sandee, it’s so good to hear from you! You were a cool roommate yourself, too. I remember your beautiful zentangle gold fish as well as the nice zentangle phone case your grandson made for you.

The way to pronounce “Qian” is just like “Chain” in English! (Sounds like “chain long”, right?)

Hope to hear from you again soon.

  • This is very attractive pattern, Thanks for sharing with us.

  • Sissee Igl

Loved the background info on this technique, pronunciation guide and examples. May you continue to tangle and enjoy and share!! Thank you!! Hugs, Sissee
