Today’s lovely new tangle pattern, Lantern-Pho, comes to us from Taiwan CZT Diane Tai and it’s her first on the site. Diane teaches in New Taipei City.
Taiwan’s very first CZT, Laura Liu, is Diane’s mother. Laura shared her Japan Diamond tangle with us last year.
I was curious about the size of Taiwan so I compared its area to Florida to get some idea. Taiwan at 13,974 sq miles (36,193 km2) is a little more than half the area of Florida (65,755 sq miles/170,304 km2). Although Florida is virtually dead flat and Taiwan quite mountainous. Populations of the two areas are roughly the same, Florida is about 20 million and Taiwan just over 23 million. That’s a lot of potential tanglers for Taiwan’s seven CZTs! 🙂
Diane writes about her inspiration for Lantern-Pho:
We went out for dinner at a Vietnamese restaurant and I noticed the beautiful pattern on the wallpaper which was made out of lanterns. Right after returning home, I tried to draw out the pattern adding little variations and lines to the overall aethestics. … Pho is a type of Vietnamese food usually known as soup noodles. Because the wallpaper art at the Vietnamese restaurant inspired me to create a pattern, I switched ‘-ful’ with ‘pho’.
Lantern-Pho‘s reversed curving lines can be a little challenging to draw but if irregularities do appear, that adds to the hand-drawn charm. However, if you feel the need to strive for wavy line perfection you can use the ogee grid instructions here on the site.
Here are Diane’s step-by-step instructions for drawing Lantern-Pho, and below she demonstrates a whole range of beautiful Zentangle-inspired ideas for applying her tangle.
As you see here in her colorful Zentangle-inspired examples, Diane also shows how to break Lantern-Pho out of a grid all together.

Congrates !
I love this! It is so serene and peaceful…just drawing a page of it puts me into such a state of calm. And it’s so pretty and flowing and organic. My new favorite!
