This undulating Zentangle® pattern, Undling, comes to us from Wisconsin tangler Susie Achter and it’s her first on the site.
Susie writes,”I live just about as far north as you can get in Wisconsin near the Wisconsin/Michigan border. I have always loved patterns and pen and ink drawings.” She came across Zentangle and learned what she could from books and TanglePatterns. “I just received Rick Roberts and Maria Thomas’s, The Book of Zentangle, which has been such an inspiration. … The closest CZT is about 150 miles from my home. I hope to take a workshop as well as attend a certification seminar next year if things work out.”
Undling can be quite a rhythmic tangle to draw and it can be a little more challenging than it looks at first. Basically you’re adding S strokes and backwards S strokes and they are the ones that gave me hiccups. Maybe it’s because I’m thinking of them as S strokes rather than just another type of curved line. Shading adds dimension to the finished tangle and it’s a very useful fill pattern for any shape of section on your Zentangle tile.
Susie illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Undling below and also demonstrates it in a monotangle Zentangle.

This one will be fun to work with
Love this new tangle. I love the closely drawn “s” lines. They will look like they jump off the page when shaded. Thanks for sharing your cool new tangle.
Love this pattern Suzie. The dimensional look of it is gorgeous. Congratulations!
Great pattern Suzie. I am looking forward to trying it. I’m thinking that if you turn the tile around each row that you do the ‘s’ would be easier to draw…just a thought.
Thank you for the nice comments. I am maybe a little over a month into Zentangle and love it. I will try your suggestion Bunny…I do turn the tile on other things, but didn’t think about it on Undling.
Very nice pattern Susie. I looks really neat with the shading. It will be nice to use in large areas. Thank you for sharing a fun new Tangle!
This was simple for me to draw even with shaky hands because the rhythmic nature hides mistakes. It has a terrific dimensionality which will work great for covering large areas. Thank you Susie.
I love this new tangle! (You aren’t totally alone. I’m a CZT with a cabin in Phelps!)
Hey Susie,
My sister and I teach in Iron Mt, MI and have a class scheduled for November. Are you anywhere near there? You can contact us at my sister’s blog at http://www.atangledplace.wordpress.com.
I also teach in the Houghton, MI area, if that’s any closer.
Very nice, doesn’t look like this won’t be a challenge for me but I really like the look.
This really is something to admire, I am hoping to get it done well. xx
I, too, have difficulty drawing S-curves backwards until I learned this tip. Complete all the S-curves in one direction first. Turn the tile one-half turn. Complete the remaining S-curves. Hope this helps. Your shading gives a wonder 3-D look.
I love this kind of tangles. Whenever I feel stressed out and need to calm down, tangles like these bring me to my happy place. I already have a small stack of unfinished ones and whenever I feel like it I pick one and just draw…….it really helps. Thanks for this one. ?
