The sweet and fun Framz pattern is from Canadian CZT Lisa Heron, and it’s her first on the site. Lisa is from the CZT X class and teaches in Regina, the capital city of the province of Saskatchewan. She’s one of three active CZTs in the province along with Saskatoon’s Margaret Bremner and Laura Harms.
Framz is an incredibly versatile tangle pattern. You could change the rectangle or square shapes to circles, triangles, diamonds, and so on. You can fill the individual frames with tangles, or whatever type of embellishment that strikes your fancy. And you can shade to your heart’s content. I added some orbs to the outside edge for a bit of decoration in my example. See what I mean? Versatile! Framz also uses that very useful and classic Zentangle technique of drawing behind that originated with the official Zentangle® pattern, Hollibaugh.
Lisa writes,
“Its design is simple, and there is no right side up. … I think that the nice part about this pattern is that there is no set order for the shapes. Once you get started you’re off to the races. So, there are really only two steps. … The shading for this pattern is also fun.
I have been told that it reminds people of frames you can buy, where there are a number of them joined together. Maybe that is where my inspiration came from and I didn’t realize?
I have a full time job that I love, but my real passion is creating. I love book binding, am learning to paint and most importantly, I am a Certified Zentangle Teacher. I love teaching the Zentangle method, sharing my passion for this art and helping people discover theirs!”
Lisa illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Framz here on her blog and includes several beautiful tiles demonstrating some Framz variations. You can see the image below in much more detail on her blog than here but Lisa sent these along so I thought I’d give you a peek at some possibilities she suggests.

- "A Zentangle has no up or down and is not a picture of something, so you have no worries about whether you can draw a hand, or a duck. You always succeed in creating a Zentangle." Thus patterns that are drawings of a recognizable naturalistic or actual object, figure, or scene, are not tangles. A pattern is not always a tangle — here's what makes a tangle. TIP: tangles never start with pencil planning.
