Jemz is a new grid-based tangle pattern from Canadian CZT® Margaret Bremner. Margaret has created a number of fun and interesting tangle patterns and you can locate them on the site using margaretb in the tags section.
In case you aren’t aware of it, Margaret is one of four talented CZTs featured in the recently-released Walter Foster publication, The Art of Zentangle, along with Normal Burnell, Penny Raile, and Lara Williams. You can read more about their “inspirational sketch journal” on the BOOK REVIEWS > THE ART OF ZENTANGLE page.
Jemz reminds me very much of Middle Eastern tile work. However this tangle was inspired by something much more contemporary than that. Margaret’s inspiration was from a game she was playing on her cell phone 🙂
While Jemz looks pretty complicated and I’m not sure I’d recommend using a grid as small as I did here, it really is an easy tangle to draw “one stroke at a time”.
As Margaret points out Jemz “begins much like Florz” but the square or diamond shapes at the grid intersections are drawn much larger in Jemz. Shading gives it a nice variety of effects.
Margaret illustrates the steps for drawing Jemz here on her blog and features it in two lovely Zentangles.
Check out the tag margaretb for more of Margaret’s patterns on TanglePatterns.com.
