How to draw HENNA DRUM

Zentangle pattern: Henna Drum. Image © Linda Farmer and TanglePatterns.com. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. You may use this image for your personal non-commercial reference only. The unauthorized pinning, reproduction or distribution of this copyrighted work is illegal. The art of Mehandi, “the application of henna as a temporary form of skin decoration in India”, makes use of a wealth of very simple repetitive designs.

Years ago, long before I learned about Zentangle®, I purchased several Mehandi-related books because I was fascinated by the patterns. If you’ve seen any henna tattoos you’ll recognize a lot of familiar cross-cultural motifs.

Henna designs have become very trendy in the Western world too. Vermont CZT® Jane MacKugler constructed this tangle based on a henna design a friend of hers had drawn on a drum, hence Henna Drum.

Jane’s original pattern also has a few tendrils but I liked it when I reached this point, so I stopped. Add a wee touch of shading and Henna Drum gains some nice dimension.

Jane illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Henna Drum here on her blog.

Update August 2019: Be sure to check out CZT Damy Teng’s adaptation of Henna Drum in her Henna M tangle.

Check out the tag janemac for more of Jane’s patterns on TanglePatterns.com.

    Love the design!

This is such a pretty tangle!!

  • This is an awesome tangle – and your preview of it is super! I’m hoping (along with a few other ladies) that she will post a little bit bigger version of the “how-to” as it’s a bit hard to see the steps, being so small. (When did I get so old I need tri-focals anyway?? LOL!)

Thanks for another great tangle! 🙂

  • It is BEAUTIFUL!! I love it! I fell in love with Mehndi when I lived in India for 11 months as a Rotary Exchange Student (1987-88). I’ve been playing with it lately and would love to become a paid henna artist. So, I instantly clicked on the link when I saw the name of the tangle. So pretty! Thanks for sharing!

I love this tangle and website,I do agree bout the small size pictures of how to’s. But other then that, everything here is so kool! Thank you.

Beautiful Tangle. I clicked on the illustration and it became very large… hope this helps. Thanks for sharing.

  • this is one of the most beautiful tangles, I like it very much, thank you for sharing!

  • I discovered this tangle a while back – and loved it. Then I met Jane MacKugler at Tangle U (an annual continuing education event created by Elaine Huffman for CZTs). THEN I realized she was the “deconstructor” of this wonderful tangle! And today, since I consulted tanglepatterns.com to refresh my memory of the stepout, I decided it was high time I formally thank Jane for sharing this delightful, easy, lovely tangle with us all! It has become one of my very favorites – practically a “mac-n-cheese”! It’s a great one, Jane. 🙂

I am loving this! So easy, so elegant! Thank you, Jane.

I was looking for a fun pattern to play with today, and came across Henna Drum for the “first time again” in 8 1/2 years. I’d forgotten how much I like drawing the petals, which, being a hobby cartoonist, reminds me of (attempting to do justice) drawing the white-gloved hands of a certain famous rodent 😀
I combined Henna Drum with another tangle, and came up with a very small drawing that I will hang in my studio (as part of the ever-changing personal art display over my drawing table).
