How to draw MOFINS

Over the last little while I’ve been going through my archives as I regularly do, looking for tangles from the past that haven’t been featured yet.

MoFins is a fun one I found in my excursions.

A less intricate looking tangle than Monday’s Fili, MoFins is a cool contrast and it’s from CZT Betsy Wilson of Maryhill tangle fame. While my example is one of the more minimalist versions Betsy demonstrates, her main versions of MoFins are mostly all more three dimensional.

Betsy writes,

I’ve been playing around with it since stumbling into it as we were driving home from Moab Utah. I struggled with the name for a while. It was nearly LeaMo ( for LEAving MOab) but it just didn’t sound quite right.

Eventually I got my husband in on the act. As my other tangles were named after places, I wanted to include our Moab adventure somehow. He suggested MoFins after a jeep trail called Fins and Things at Moab. It just seems to fit!

I love tangles with a Printemps-like spiral and MoFins is an interesting ribbon-style tangle making use of this motif. For my example I chose one of the versions Betsy shares, one with simple weight added for emphasis.

Betsy illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing MoFins here on her blog where she shares a whole raft (boatload?) of easy and interesting variations of her tangle.
