Ando, today’s pretty tangle pattern, is from Ohio CZT Kim Winebrenner who previously shared her Kollide tangle with us.
Kim writes,
“I named this tangle ‘Ando’ for Ando Hiroshige, the Japanese artist famous for his woodblock prints.
The specific inspiration for Ando is a beautiful detail on the left side of his print of ‘Asakusa Rice Fields’.”
This is a public domain image of the print Kim refers to from wikigallery.org and although it’s not particularly clear you can make out the detail on the left side of the print.
For me the “trickiest” part of Ando was the “inside swirl” of Step 5 but once I practiced it a few times for the “muscle memory” it became much easier to do. My example is two back-to-back rows of Ando as Kim also shows in her tips below.
Kim illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Ando here and features it in a lovely Zentangle with some Zentangle®-original Mooka-like tendrils, some Tipple orbs and lots of auras.

Beautiful, can’t wait to try it!
Look forward to trying this one out soon.
this is so pretty! I drew it on a curve. Gorgeous! the rounded ends of the embellishments inside just give it so much weight.
Thanks for the notes. I tried a couple of times before noticing the notes – they really helped.
This is a beautiful design! I can’t believe it’s so easy to create. Thank you for the detailed directions!
My new favorite tangle!! I love how the pattern develops when you stack the segments! A treasure, for sure. Thank you for sharing this, Kim!!
Very pretty tangle.

Currently obsessed with this one! Thank you! It looks more complicated than it really is which is always an awesome attribute.
