How to draw CHARTZ

If you are new to Zentangle the Official Kit has an excellent DVD instruction tutorial by Maria Thomas, in addition to the all the supplies you’ll need to get started. It’s a personal workshop in a box!  … Where was I? Oh yah …

This easy tangle reminds me a little of lava lamps, it’s fun to look at and to draw. A very long time ago CZT Suzanne McNeill posted steps to her version of Chartz from her first Zentangle title, Zentangle Basics. I’ve debated with myself about posting it ever since because it’s not the same as the original tangle from the Kit.

The unauthorized pinning, reproduction or distribution of this copyrighted work is illegal. So here’s a compromise I’m happy with — a link to Suzanne’s steps here and my drawing of the Zentangle®-original tangle Chartz above with solid orbs and some graphite added, just for the fun of it. And on the right is my slight adaptation of the Chartz variation from the Legend in the Kit. Thus we have another Zentangle®-original tangle and two variations.

UPDATE: Early in the Summer of 2014 Suzanne McNeill’s blog was removed and all the posts and images were lost. The site is being reconstructed as much as possible but the links will no longer be the same. Many of the patterns on TanglePatterns can quite easily be figured out. For those that might be a little more difficult, Suzanne has graciously given me permission to post her copyright-protected images on TanglePatterns for your convenience.

Thus patterns that are drawings of a recognizable naturalistic or actual object, figure, or scene, are not tangles. A pattern is not always a tangle — here's what makes a tangle.
