CZT Arja de Lange-Huisman of Gouda in the Netherlands shares the tangle Arundel with us.
Arja deconstructed this from the pattern she observed in the “metal framework of a window in a café“. The café is located in the medieval Arundel Castle, in the market town of Arundel about 50 miles southwest of London, England.
According to Wikipedia, this historic castle “was established by Roger de Montgomery on Christmas Day 1067. Roger became the first to hold the earldom of Arundel by the graces of William the Conqueror. … Arundel Castle and the earldom have passed through generations almost directly since 1138. … Today the castle remains the principal seat of the Dukes of Norfolk.” Wow, imagine being able to trace your ancestry that far back.
Arundel, the tangle pattern, does have a leaded-glass look to it and there are many ways to play with this pattern including a bit of shading as I’ve done in my example above. Here on the right is a simple variation of Arundel I played with. One small change produces quite a different look. Try it and see what you come up with.
A reminder that it’s important to take your time when creating the orbs and you’ll get nicely-formed shapes. Create each mark meaningfully using your Micron as we learned in this tutorial recently.
Arja illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Arundel here on her blog. (Note: click on Arja’s steps image for a larger version.)

What a lovely pattern, with a lovely name which holds a bit of nostalgia for me, as I lived in Anne Arundel County, Maryland when my first daughter was born…. Thank you so much for sharing what I know will become a favorite with me.
If your ever in the UK this place is well worth a visit, Its only about 30 miles from my mother-in-laws place and you can spend days walking round the place.
I particularly love the tangles with a meaning!!
