How to draw TESALI

Zentangle pattern: TesaliTesali is a wonderful grid-based tangle pattern with a Moorish style to it. Tesali was deconstructed by Elena Hadzijaneva who has shared several patterns with us including one of my favorites, Hypnotic. No doubt Elena named her tangle as a play on tessellations.

As it stands, Elena’s pattern is not strictly speaking a tangle because it begins with pencil lines. So I made an inked grid the first step of the pattern construction. “No pencil, no eraser … just pure Zentangle® magic … one stroke at a time.”

What makes this tangle pattern particularly wonderful is that it can be varied in many interesting ways.

Variations of Elena's Tesali tangle patternOnce you get the first 3 steps of the pattern drawn, you have the basic structure shown on the top left here in the variations I played with while I “watched” the Academy Awards last night.

When you draw those three steps often enough, you get to a point when you can draw it in one continuous line, filling alternating rows. Then turn your tile 180° and repeat to fill the remaining rows in your grid.

As always, a touch of shading adds pop to this tangle. I think you’ll have a lot of fun with this one, I certainly did!

Elena illustrates the steps for drawing her Tesali tangle pattern here.
