Hello again friends, welcome back for Friday’s fun tangle exploration!
Today’s versatile Rome tangle is from California CZT Li-Shan Hsu and it’s her first on the site.
Li-Shan tells us a little about herself and her Zentangle® practice:
As a current Californian, Li-Shan who was born and raised in Taiwan, encountered the beauty of Zentangle art and its unique philosophy in 2015. She hasn’t stopped her Zentangle practice and has implemented its philosophy in her daily life ever since.
With years of practice and great enthusiasm, Li-Shan attended the Zentangle Seminar organized by Rick and Maria, the founders of Zentangle in Providence, Rhode Island (2018). After that seminar, she was officially certified as a Zentangle teacher.
Benefiting from Zentangle art through these years, she loves sharing her own Zentangle journey with anyone who is looking for a change in their ordinary life through the process of learning to create Zentangle art.
She introduces her Rome tangle and explains why she named it so,
I drew this tangle purely by accident, I wasn’t trying to deconstruct any pattern whatsoever. All I wanted to do at that time is just try to divide a huge empty space into smaller spaces so that I can put other tangles in.
Who knows with some simple I and S strokes, it turns out to be such a beautiful tangle and also a perfect string for Reticula and Fragments.
The final image of this tangle reminds me of the Colosseum I once visited in Rome, that’s why it gets this name.
Zentangle is truly full of surprises, it not only helps me discover a beautiful tangle, but also brings back some wonderful memories.
As you can see from Li-Shan’s lovely Bijou tile above, Rome is a flowing blank canvas for any embellishment you want to add, simple or otherwise. To my mind Rome shares a little DNA with CZT Milde Weiss’s Loxo. The site’s main example is Li-Shan’s from her steps image.
Li-Shan illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Rome below. As you can see it includes auras and rounding tangle enhancements.
As you enjoy any of the tangles on the site, please leave a comment of thanks and encouragement to show the artists you appreciate them for sharing their creativity to inspire yours. Your thanks helps motivate them to continue to share! And please share a link to your favorite tangles on social media. Thanks!

Such a good tangle!
Such a lovely pattern! Thank you!
I couldn’t remember the name of this, and tried to find it as a “stone” Tangle, because that is what it reminds me of. #stone #fence #block
