How to draw KRUFFLE

Hi everyone, great to see you again!

Welcome to another week of fun tangles and as usual we warm up our Microns with a super easy one.

Colorado CZT Kelli King’s fun ribbon-style Kruffle (not to be confused with CZT Sandy Hunter’s Cruffle) is a tangleation of the Zentangle®-original Crescent Moon.

Kelli explains how she got into Zentangle and and gives us the background on her tangle,

I have been tangling since 2014 when I saw some Zentangle art on the blog of a friend of mine. I asked her what in the world “Zentangle” was, and she directed me to Rick and Maria’s site where I found my local CZT Deb Prewitt and took an intro class. I’d never taken an “art” class before, but she made it so fun and attainable! I just loved it. I still have that cute little muslin bag I got during that intro class.

I haven’t always been a super-active tangler, but I kept coming back to Zentangle when I needed to clear my head of stressful things or when I just wanted to relax and create something. When ZTHQ started releasing their project packs I ordered every single one as they came out and just got so excited about Zentangle! I came back to it full-force in 2020 (because…2020!) and I decided that I really needed to share this with people as a CZT myself. I attended the very first online CZT seminar 36, and it was amazing. I feel so blessed to be a part of such a wonderful group of people. In a world full of negativity, Zentangle and Zentangle people are truly a light in the darkness. I learned so much and had so much fun! Now, I just can’t stop tangling.

I have called this tangle “Kruffle” because I first drew it when I was experimenting with how to make Crescent Moon into a border, and when I showed it to my husband he said it looked like a ruffle. So…Kruffle.

There are many ways to embellish and “tangleate” Crescent Moon and Kruffle can add a simple frame to a Zentangle tile and/or “ride the string” if that’s the way you want to go.

Kelli illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Kruffle below and she notes about her duotangle, “In my example I have also used Bronx Cheer. Not telling what’s underneath that 😉 “. In case you’re wondering why Kelli’s tile looks a little different from her steps, she’s used Kruffle along the string thus no ink stroke through the middle.
