How to draw IRICE

Zentangle pattern: Irice. Image © Linda Farmer and TanglePatterns.com. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. You may use this image for your personal non-commercial reference only. The unauthorized pinning, reproduction or distribution of this copyrighted work is illegal.Much has happened since Taiwan CZT Lin Chiu traveled all the way to Providence RI in November 2014 to attend the 17th certification training class. Lin was one of only 17 CZTs in Taiwan at the time five years ago.

Since then Zentangle began offering certification classes in Asia and as a result — according to Julie Willand at Zentangle HQ (thanks Julie!) — “There are approximately 602 Taiwanese CZTs. Taiwan is second behind the US for most CZTs.” By my count, there are now 4,518 CZTs worldwide.

Julie kindly provided an update of the tallies for all the countries and I’ve added it to my LIST OF CZTs BY COUNTRY page. It’s an amazing list now!

What a testament to the global reach and popularity of this wonderful art form.

Today we’re delighted to explore Lin’s pretty Irice tangle, it’s one I’ve sprung from the archives and it becomes Lin’s fifth tangle on the site.

Irice was inspired by this lighting fixture:

Irice is easily composed with lots of spirals, always fun to tangle. And as you’ll see from Lin’s examples there are many different looks to this one. For my example I placed several ribbons side-by-side to create an overall pattern that looks like it might have begun with a grid.

Lin illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Irice below where she includes three tile examples featuring some variations to explore. I’ve added an enlargement of the second and third steps below to make them easier to see.
