Zentangle® Project Pack #01 Summary – Introducing Sakura’s White Gelly Roll Pens

Zentangle Project Pack #1

Zentangle’s Project Pack #01 “is a celebration of the newly released white gel pens from our friends at Sakura, along with a surprise of other tangling tools and tiles to use along with us in the first Project Pack tutorials.

As Molly notes in the warmup video, “this is a great opportunity to test out these new pens and kind of get used to how they feel.

SUPPLIES: The first Project Pack is available here ($19.95) in the zentangle.com store and it’s certainly a convenient way to get all the supplies for the project. However for those of us whose budgets are tight, the Introduction video reviews the items in the Project Pack and you might discover you have suitable alternatives in your own Zentangle supplies. Here are a few of the items from the Pack:

Sakura has just released the White Gelly Roll pen in sizes 05, 08 and 10 and tips for working with these lovely new tools are demonstrated throughout this series of videos.

The following chronology is a summary of the videos for Project Pack #01 with links to the individual videos. Either click the video #’s title link or the image itself to view the full video on YouTube.

Note: the tangles included in these videos are each linked to their own post on TanglePatterns where you can also locate these videos.

It isn’t necessary to watch the videos in sequence, but it will be very helpful for you to watch the warmup video first.

Warm-Up

In the warm-up video (15:58) with Maria’s daughter and CZT Molly Hollibaugh, Molly introduces Sakura’s new White Gelly Roll pens and gives some tips on how to get comfortable and work with them.

She begins by putting a loose spiral string down on a black Bijou tile (1:20) with a white charcoal pencil.

Using the largest Gelly Roll, the #10, she tests the nib on the back of the tile to get a feel for the how the ink flows. Molly shares that she likes to do that with all her pens, “for me to just get the feel for it, so just a little squiggle here and there“.

Next Molly starts drawing orbs beginning with a tiny one at the center of the spiral and slightly increasing each one in size as she moves along the charcoal string. “Ever so slightly that each next orb is just a little bit bigger, ever so slightly slowly drawing each orb, no need to rush just taking your time, one stroke at a time reminding yourself to breathe. and turn your tile.

Once the orbs are added, (5:33) Molly starts at the outer edge and adds strokes going between the orbs and stopping at the next string line. She changes pens to the 05 (7:40) and adds aura lines (“simple arcs“) to the edges of the orbs. When those are complete she changes back to the 10 and adds ink to the outside edges between the orbs.
Finally she adds graphite shading (13:22) to complete her tile.

Project Pack 01 - WarmUp

Video 1

In Day 1’s video (7:53) with Rick’s company (and Molly’s hand), Maria tangles Dewd on a black tile using the 10 Sakura Gelly Roll pen and finishes it by shading with a graphite pencil then adding a white charcoal pencil “glow” or halo around the outer edges.

Martha named this because she thought it looked like dew on the morning grass so we went with that dew drops – Dewd.

3 comments to Zentangle® Project Pack #01 Summary – Introducing Sakura’s White Gelly Roll Pens

  • Ginger Young

I saw the intro from 2017 on the White Sakura pens. For totally different art projects, I’ve used the Uniball Signo UM 153 & like it a lot. The downside, the ink dries out if you don’t use the pen for awhile. (even if it’s never been used & still in the box)
Has anyone had the problem of the White Sakura pens doing that?
They both have caps to put over the points when not in use.
It would be helpful to know before I purchase.
Thanks so very much for a terrific site, Linda.
I used it years ago & would use small mixed media paper sketchbooks, marking off ahead of time 3.5″ squares so I could carry it with me while waiting at doctors offices, etc. I could get two on each side of the paper & use front & back.
