How to draw DECOO

I had such a lovely weekend visiting with my family via text, phone and video. Enjoying special meals dining out for my favorite Italian cuisine, and dining in courtesy of Robert’s grilling expertise. Watching a few Women’s World Cup matches. AND total avoidance of my “to do” list — I shall bask in this glow all week 🙂

For our Monday tangle we’re exploring another fun and easy one from Belgian CZT Ria Matheussen. Decoo has loads of interesting potential as you’ll see in Ria’s illustrations.

Ria enjoys going on tangle hunts and she explains how Decoo came about and describes a few ways to use it:

In the past I have found inspiration in Art Nouveau (Horti) and Art Deco (Nouvart) and now again I searched in that area.

Decoo was inspired by a detail of an Art Deco work, shown here.

There a lot of “Printemps” used in this tangle that can be drawn as a ribbon or border, or as a filler.

As background you can place every “stroke” in the same direction or you can mirror, which gives a totally different result. Many variations are possible and I have found a few of them.

Decoo is easy to draw and easy to combine with other tangles. I have made my strokes straight but also curved ones are possible.

I explored the fun mirrored version of Decoo Ria shows below but in the end decided on the basic form to use for my example. There are lots of fun ways to go with this one!

Ria illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Decoo here and she includes suggestions for ways to vary it, including that fun mirrored version. “Under the steps I have made a composition with two other patterns, I like to use regularly: Phroz and Fassett.

Thus patterns that are drawings of a recognizable naturalistic or actual object, figure, or scene, are not tangles. A pattern is not always a tangle — here's what makes a tangle. TIP: tangles never start with pencil planning.
