And here’s our first tangle for the month of June for your creative explorations. And oh, the possibilities!
It has been quite some time since we’ve had a tangle from CZT Dennie York but lucky us, she’s here today with her Haf n Haf and as she notes, “It’s very simple and easy with lots of possible variations.” In the past Dennie shared her Keystone tangle with us.
Dennie writes,
My sister Karin Tarter and I, who teach the Zentangle Method™ together, have been busy for a while. We do tangle daily, but haven’t been up to teaching classes. We plan to get back into it this summer. So many ideas, so little time.
I live in New Mexico, just north of Albuquerque, where it should be feeling like summer by now, but we’ve had a strange spring with lots of precipitation, cold weather, and wind (usual).
Because of all the snow in the northern mountains, the runoff has caused our Rio Grande river to be 10 times higher and running faster that it has in almost 10 years. So everything is green and beautiful! Here’s a picture of the Rio Grande along the bosque with the Sandia Mountains in the background.
When I first got into Zentangle, grid and geometric patterns were my ‘go to’ patterns. Eventually I became more fond of ‘organic’ type patterns.
But the other day, while getting lost in the black hole of the internet, something similar to this pattern jumped out at me. I spent a little time with it, showed it to my sister (also a CZT9) and we discovered that it had lots and lots of possibilities. The negative and positive aspects and all the variations are just endless.
“Lots and lots of possibilities” sure is right! I spent quite a bit of relaxing time myself exploring some of Haf n Haf‘s potential. A tangle with patterns within it. My main example above actually came as a result of a “no mistake”, when it was my intention to use Dennie’s example at the top right of her steps image like the one you see here. Instead of alternating the slant of the strokes of Step 2 in the grid squares, I kept going with them all in the same direction. Oopsie! I really enjoyed that discovery and the sort of notan look that developed once I inked in a few spots.
Dennie illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Haf n Haf below where she includes a whole range of potential variations for her fun tangle. In addition to changing the starting middle shape (circle, square, triangle) and the fills and auras, a whole spectrum of interesting Haf n Haf possibilities emerges from exploring rotating and mirroring the resulting reticula.
When Dennie and Karin get their classes going again this summer you can find out more here on their blog. They offer Zentangle® classes in Albuquerque, Rio Rancho, and Santa Fe.

Dennie – Thanks so much for Haf-n-Haf. I enjoy adapting “grid tangles” to a wonky grid. (Yes, even Knightsbridge!) This one is a winner with many such possibilities.
Looks great to play with, thank you for sharing!
Thanks Dennie for sharing such a fun grid. Will be a fun play next time I have time to tangle.
Love the puzzle piece look to this. Looks like lots of fun. Adding to my ‘ToDo’ list. Thanks for sharing Dennie!
Dennie,
How fortunate to be able to share ZT with your sister!
I loVE grid patterns. Thank you for adding this delightful tangle to my repertoire!
Wow!!! What a clever tangle, Dennie, looks lots of fun. It’s great for a background as well as for a stand-alone one. Thanks for sharing. I’ll surely play with this one. Keep tangling! 😉
This is such a fun tangle to work with! As usually happens, because of being mildly dyslexic, I got curves going the “opposite” way from their comrades, and now some of my filled spaces, when they’re paired, look like very drunk, cross-eyed frogs staring out at me :-D. I like that it’s such a playful pattern, and I can take it in many directions…drunk frogs, or sober little guys:-)
Dennie, As I was scrolling through, anxious to see today’s tangle, I immediately recognized your photo! I’m from Albuquerque, but now live-and teach Zentangle out of Pagosa Springs, CO, near the head-waters of the Rio Grande! It is so nice to see someone “familiar”, even though the Zentangle journey has opened my world to so many wonderful people and cultures. Do you teach Zentangle in Albuquerque? I’m excited to try your tangle and look forward to many more! I typically don’t get involved with online sharing etc. because my computer skills are quite limited, but it was a nice surprise to see something familiar in the ever-expanding Zentangle world! Thank you for your contribution….gotta go try Haf n Haf!
What an interesting fragment! You can morph it into several designs! Thank you for sharing, Dennie, and Thank you, Linda for this amazing website for us all to learn from!
So beautiful and simple! But It means: as simples as a haute-couture dress…
