Jenna Black is on a roll with new tangles. Recently she shared her Cross-ur-Heart tangle with us and today we have her fun Trisnail to explore.
Inspired by a photo of a beautiful seashell she had seen online Jenna set out to deconstruct the spiked, spiral-shaped Trisnail.
She writes,
It reminds me somewhat of a combination of Snail and Tri-bee, so I named it Trisnail.
You can stop at step 3 and add all kinds of different embellishments, but so far my favorite is the one I added in step 4. And because the triangles are on the outside of the spiral, you can vary their sizes to fill up string sections. You can see from my variation how I made it fill up the square.
Trisnail also reminds me a lot of Alaura, but Jenna’s tangle is an easier way to get the finished effect. Jenna’s favorite fill using auras is the one I used for my example, also following her suggestion to make the outer spikes reach the outer edges of my “string” to fill up the square. Shading adds a lot to this fun and easy tangle. Trisnail offers a huge range of fill choices to embellish and vary this tangle. And Trisnail comes together quite quickly, “one stroke at a time™”.
Jenna illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Trisnail below, together with a variation and a beautiful example Zentangle® tile.
As you enjoy any of the tangles on the site, please do leave a comment of thanks and encouragement to show the artists you appreciate them for sharing their creativity to inspire yours.

This is wonderful, Jenna! What a fun way to “fill” a spiral! And I love the additions to this tangle on your example tile … Is that a named tangle or just your own embellishment? Thanks for publishing this one, Linda. 🙂
I was thinking embellished Mooka fronds myself …
It reminds me of the line and dot I often use to embellish Flux, or other tangles that have a similar teardrop shape.
Stunning !!!
Thanks!
What a wonderful pattern, so much fun to do! Thanks, Jenna!
Glad you like it! Thanks!
I know I am going to enjoy trisnail. Hopefully later today. Thanks!
